geography

Grèzes is located in the Gevaudan on the slopes of Truc de Grèzes , a witness mountain of limestone which has a view over the Causse and the Margeride offers. Neighboring communities are Palhers in the northwest and Cultures in the southeast. Grèzes is 6 kilometers southeast of the canton capital Marvejols and 13 kilometers west of Mende .

history

Archaeological excavations in 1998 and 1999 on the western slope of the Truc de Grèzes proved to be difficult because burial sites from the Middle Ages could not be damaged, and 37 burial sites from the 5th and 6th centuries were found. Eventually, however, the remains of temporary homes from the Neolithic period were found .

On the summit of the Truc de Grèzes , potsherds were found, which indicate that a Celtic oppidum of the Gabali tribe was located there. In the 3rd century a Roman military camp Gredonense castrum was built in place of the old oppidum on the top of the mountain, a village called Gredone was formed on the slope . A cippus and two Roman columns were found where Gredone was at that time. Roof tiles , pottery shards, a bronze statue of Emperor Aurelian (214–275) and Roman coins were found on the summit . According to Gregory of Tours (538-594), the Alamanne Chrocus and his troops invaded the Gévaudan. The inhabitants of the area around Grèzes holed up in the Roman castrum and were besieged there. The Alamanni tried to force the Gabali to give up by capturing the bishop Privat von Mende († 259/260). However, this did not succeed, whereupon the Alemanni released the Gabali. Privately succumbed to his injuries.

Attractions
