Barjac is a French commune in the department of Lozère in the region Occitania . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Mende and the Canton of Chirac . The village has 751 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) on an area of ​​29.92 km².

geography

Barjac is located in the valley of the Lot River at the confluence with the Ginèze between Mende and Chanac . The place lies at an altitude between 650 and 1212 m on the edge of the Causse-Changefège. Neighboring communities are Cultures , Balsièges , Esclanèdes and Gabrias .

history

In the 19th century Roman mosaics and pottery were found near Barjac. In the Middle Ages, the area around Barjac and the place itself belonged to the barons of Cénaret, who played an important role during the wars of religion.

Population development

The population has decreased significantly since the mid-19th century. In 1841 the place still had 1,028 inhabitants. After that, the population decreased significantly. Since 1968 the population has increased again by almost 50%.

Infrastructure

Barjac is on the D88 national road. The next motorway is the A75 (European road E11) approx. 12 km westward as the crow flies, accessible via the department road D808. The main trade is agriculture and forestry as well as smaller industrial companies.

To the north of Barjac in the direction of Marvejols , a large amount of spar is mined, which is also offered under the references "Les Causses" or "Causses".

Attractions

One of the sights of Barjac is a 19th century statue of the Virgin Mary on the Cénaret hill . This statue is also a place of pilgrimage. Here are also the remains of a Romanesque-Gothic church from the 13th century with a choir from the 14th century and 4 side chapels. On the hill above the town there was a castle of the Barons of Cénaret, which was demolished in 1597 by order of the Duke of Ventadour.
