Barjac is a French commune with 1596 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the French department of Gard in the Occitanie region .

geography

Barjac lies on a knoll between the river Cèze to the west and the Gorges de l'Ardèche to the east .

history

Most of the town's buildings date from the Renaissance . The center of the old town is characterized by houses, narrow streets and squares from this era. The castle of the Counts of Roure , formerly called the citadelle , has been rebuilt again and again since the 12th century. There is now a library in the former stables and a cinema in the former kitchen rooms. At the end of July, the castle hosts the annual Chansons et paroles (songs and words) festival .

The Dolmen des Oeillantes are a closely spaced group of dolmen near Largentière , northeast of Barjac.

Personalities

From 1993 to 2008, the German painter and sculptor Anselm Kiefer lived and worked in the former La Ribaute silk factory near Barjac on a former industrial site of 35 hectares.
