Bătrâna or old spelling Bătrîna [ ˈbətrɨna ] ( German  Altendorf , Hungarian Batrina ) is a municipality in the Hunedoara district in Transylvania , Romania .

The municipality of Bătrâna is located in a mountainous landscape in southwestern Transylvania in the north of the Poiana-Ruscă Mountains . In the historical district of Marosillye - today Ilia - of Hunyad County ( Eisenmarkt County ), in the west of the Hunedoara district, the place Bătrâna is located on the county road ( Drum județean ) DJ 688 about 60 kilometers (about 25 km as the crow flies) southwest of the district capital Deva ( Diemrich ) removed.

The place Bătrâna was first mentioned in 1750. Because of the difficult living conditions in the incorporated villages, also due to a lack of electricity, unpaved roads, no running water, the younger population has left the places more and more, so that the majority of older people live here. Although the three incorporated villages had no electricity connection (hoped to get one in 2012), internet connection was relocated here in 2010.

The church of the village of Bătrâna, located in the middle of a cemetery, is the only church on the area of ​​the municipality. Although Bătrâna has a cemetery, the dead are buried here in their own garden near the houses.

The main occupations of the population are agriculture and livestock, especially sheep and cattle.

In the official survey of 1850, 640 people lived in the area of ​​today's municipality. 633 of them were Romanians and seven were Roma . The highest number of inhabitants (725, three of whom called themselves German ) - and at the same time that of the Romanians (722) - was reached in 1910. The highest population of the Magyars (46) and that of the Roma (8) was reached in 1966, that of the Romanian Germans (5) in 1941. In addition, 17 residents identified themselves as Ukrainians and ten residents as Serbs in 1966 . Since 1910 the population has been falling steadily, so that in 2002 175 Romanians were registered in the municipality of Bătrâna.

The municipality of Bătrâna, with its 124 inhabitants (2012), ranks second in terms of depopulation in Romania. Since 2010, due to the steadily decreasing population, a merger with the municipality of Dobra has been considered.
