Architectural monuments in South Tyrol
There are more than 4800 architectural monuments in South Tyrol . Their protection and care is the responsibility of the Department of Monument Preservation of the South Tyrolean Provincial Administration.
history
The first efforts to protect monuments in what was then the Crown Land of Tyrol go back to the middle of the 19th century, for example through the work of Karl Atz ; an official monument office was not established in Austria-Hungary until 1911. After the annexation of South Tyrol by Italy as a result of the First World War , the monument protection authority in Trento took over responsibility for the preservation of monuments . In 1939 the Monument Protection Act came into force, which essentially remained in force until 2004. In the years after the Second World War , Nicolò Rasmo was primarily responsible for the South Tyrolean monuments , in 1973 the State of South Tyrol took over the relevant competencies as part of the Second Statute of Autonomy and founded the State Monuments Office . First public curator was Karl Wolf Gruber (1973-1982). Under his aegis, work began on the systematic creation of lists of monuments, which were concluded in 1988 under his successor Helmut Stampfer (1983–2007). Legal Aspects
The state of South Tyrol has primary legislative powers in the area of monument protection. Nevertheless, state regulations apply primarily, while the state laws only regulate aspects specific to South Tyrol. A monument is bound by a decision by the South Tyrolean provincial government .
Monument lists
In South Tyrol between 1973 and 1988 monument protection lists were drawn up for all municipalities. In 1991 the Athesia publishing house published a complete directory as a publication of architectural monuments in South Tyrol . Instead of a new edition, it was decided to set up the monument browser on the website of the Monument Preservation Department . A constantly updated list of over 4800 architectural monuments is freely accessible there.
