The House of the History of the Ruhr Area in Bochum is a joint institution of the Ruhr University Bochum and the Foundation History of the Ruhr Area and sees itself as an interdisciplinary research facility.

The Foundation History of the Ruhr Area , the Archive for Social Movements and the Institute for Social Movements are housed under its roof . The building is the former printing company of IG Bergbau und Energie and is located near the Bochum theater .

The Institute for Social Movements at the Ruhr University Bochum emerged from the "Institute for Research into the European Labor Movement", which was essentially initiated by Hans Mommsen and which was founded in the early 1970s as the "Research Center for Materials on the History of the Labor Movement" and in February 1980 received the status of a university institute.

The foundation was initiated by Klaus Tenfelde and approved by the Arnsberg district government in June 1998 . For purpose of the foundation is one, "to protect the assigned book collections and archives and to get sense to use to explore scientific, to expand and make available to the public." At the Foundation participate Ruhr-University Bochum, the city of Bochum, the RAG AG , the Ruhr Mining Association, the DMT Society for Teaching and Education and the IG Bergbau, Chemie, Energie .

The facilities of the house include the archive for social movements, the library of the Ruhr area and the scientific research department of the institute for social movements.

Every three years the Ruhr Area Library Foundation awards the Bochum Historian Prize.

The House of History has been listed in the Route of Industrial Culture , theme route Bochum since March 2014 .

Library

The stock of books that can be viewed and borrowed is over 450,000 individual volumes and 580 specialist journals . The mining library, founded in 1859, has 240,000 individual volumes with individual items up to 200 years old. In addition to specialist books on various topics from technology and mining, this also includes historical maps and the complete annual reports of the former railway companies operating in the Ruhr area .

Other holdings include the library of the Institute for Social Movements (around 140,000 volumes) and the library of the former mining and energy union (around 35,000 volumes). The Documentation Center Ruhr Area Research (DSR) records in particular relevant Ruhr area literature.

The holdings of the research institute Work, Education, Participation , which was closed in 2007 , were transferred to the library until 2010.

The library sigel is Bm 3/3 .
