History of the post in Berlin

Main article: Postal history and postage stamps of Berlin

From August 2, 1945, there was a restricted, official postal service in Greater Berlin, which had to be adapted to the new circumstances from March 20, 1948, when the Soviet representative left the Allied command and thus ended Germany's four-power government. In addition, parcel and parcel shipping between Berlin and the four occupation zones was interrupted. On June 20, 1948, the currency reform was carried out in West Germany , the Soviet occupation decreed its monetary reform for June 23, 1948 in the Eastern Zone and Greater Berlin. The western allies declared the decision regarding Greater Berlin null and void. On June 25, the Deutsche Mark of the Bank deutscher Länder was introduced as legal tender in the western sectors of Berlin. The day before, on June 24th, 1948, the stamps of the Bizone - Control Council series 1947 with postal squirrel imprint - were handed in at the counters of the post offices in Berlin (West) . The Eastern Zone did not recognize these postage stamps and declared them and the entire postal administration in Berlin (West) to be illegal. On September 1, 1948, the following new stamps with the black overprint "BERLIN" were issued in Berlin (West).

The issues of the Allied and Soviet occupation zones were also valid for postage until March 21, 1949 , after which only Berlin's own postage stamps and postage stamps from the western zone and the then-founded Federal Republic of Germany were allowed for postage.
