Châtelaillon-Plage is a municipality and a seaside resort with 5846 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) on the French Atlantic coast.

history

On the hill of Vieux Châtelaillon, in the Nécropole des Sables, there are various grave finds from the Gallo-Roman period and the Christianisation period, which testify to the long history of settlement in this place.

In the 12th century, the fortification Castrum Allionis was built on the Pointe du Cornard, which was then the center of power of the Aunis . Today there is no longer the slightest trace of this fortification, as it was washed over by the sea. Thus in the 17th century only a small hamlet with small farms and a few fishermen's huts remained.

In the district of Les Boucholeurs you can still see some old agricultural buildings and buildings used for oyster farming from the time before the 19th century.

It was not until the end of the 19th century that the French state railways developed the town into a bathing station with direct train connections from Paris to Châtelaillon-Plage. This triggered the construction of a large number of villas on the coast in the style of the turn of the century . Today these form a colorful mix of styles, as the owners mostly used the architectural styles of their home regions when they built their villas .

Population development

The beach was completely refilled in 1989

The population development declined slightly until the early 1990s. A large-scale revitalization program of the place, which in 1989 led to the filling of a new sandy beach approximately three kilometers long, then brought about the turning point. Since then, the population has been rising again continuously:
