Charlotte Elisabeth Grace Roche [ ɹəʊʃ ] (born March 18, 1978 in High Wycombe , England ) is a British- German presenter , producer , actress , radio play speaker and author .

life and career

Roche came to Germany from London via the Netherlands at the age of one as the daughter of an engineer and a politically active and artistically active mother . She grew up bilingual. When she was five years old, the parents divorced. She later incorporated the associated experiences into her books Wetlands and Lap Prayers . She attended elementary school in Niederkrüchten and in 1989 switched to the St. Wolfhelm High School in the neighboring Schwalmtal . After eighth grade she moved to Mönchengladbach and attended the Hugo Junkers high school in the Rheydt district , from which she left after the eleventh grade.

Roche was a British citizen for a long time, but became a German citizen out of concerns about Brexit .

Roche gained first stage experience during her high school years in theater groups. In 1993 she moved out of home and founded the garage rock band The Dubinskis with three friends . A time followed when she did a lot to get noticed - inflicting wounds on herself to be able to draw pictures with her blood, tried different drugs or shaved her bald head. In 2001 her brother and her two stepbrothers were killed in a car accident and their mother was seriously injured. In 2002 the daughter of Roche and Eric Pfeil , the producer and writer of their former show Fast Forward , was born. Roche has been married to Brainpool co- founder Martin Keß since 2007 . Their daughter and Kess' son from their first marriage grow up with the couple.

Moderation and television

After a successful casting in the spring of 1998, Roche became known to a wider audience through her work as a presenter for VIVA Zwei on the music program Fast Forward . In 2000 she was heard for the first time as a narrator in the audio book Die Speed Queen by Stewart O'Nan , and she also received a second broadcast with Trendspotting . In 2001 Roche, meanwhile the figurehead of the VIVA Zwei channel, was nominated for the first time for the Grimme Prize for “its competent and yet own style of moderation” . Her unconventional way of conducting interviews earned what Harald Schmidt called the eccentric "Queen of German Pop Television" a lot of praise.

After VIVA Zwei ceased broadcasting on January 7, 2002, Fast Forward was continued on VIVA , but was discontinued towards the end of 2004. Roche refused to moderate the last planned episodes. In 2002 she received the Bavarian TV Prize for her moderation of Fast Forward , and two years later the Grimme Prize. From 2003 Roche hosted an interview program with ProSieben entitled Charlotte Roche meets ... , which was discontinued after 13 episodes. In 2006 she hosted four episodes of the music magazine Tracks produced by ZDF at ARTE . In 2007 it led through the opening of the Berlinale . She was also part of the cast of the ARD council show Pssst ... , which was re-launched with Harald Schmidt as the presenter. In 2008 she got a show on 3sat called Charlotte Roche under… , in which she accompanied representatives of various professional groups at work. As of September 2009, as the successor to Amelie Fried , she hosted the Radio Bremen talk show 3 to 9 together with Giovanni di Lorenzo . At the beginning of 2010 Roche and Radio Bremen Program Director Dirk Hansen announced that the collaboration would be terminated by mutual agreement. Even before Roche's first appearance, the former Bremen State Councilor for Culture Elisabeth Motschmann (CDU), who is also on the Broadcasting Council of Radio Bremen (RB) and in the Bremen citizenship , protested against the obligation of the new presenter. From March 2012 Roche hosted the talk show Roche & Böhmermann on ZDFkultur together with Jan Böhmermann . In early 2013, the ZDF reported that the talk show, of which 16 episodes were broadcast, would not be continued. In 2018, she hosted an episode of the talk show format The Story of an Evening , which was first broadcast on December 1, 2018 on NDR. The four prominent guests on this 45-minute program were Tim Wiese , Christine Neubauer , Annalena Baerbock and Robert Stadlober . In contrast to the usual talk show formats, it was not about politics or career stories, but about the personal fears and dreams of those involved.

As part of the ProSieben program “ Das Duell um die Welt ” in the team edition, she had four titanium hooks implanted in her back in Russia in 2019 and jumped from one of them (and a safety harness) attached to a bungee rope Bridge. As part of the TV program TV Total , she took part in the TV total Stock Car Crash Challenge , the TV total PokerStars.de night and the TV Total show session.

Film and music

In 2002 Roche made an appearance in the music video for the song Club of the Beautiful Mothers of the band Fehlfarben . In 2003 she took on a narration role for the audio book for Nick McDonell's Twelve . In 2004 she sang the title Dreams on the album Here Comes Love by Superpitcher and made her first feature film Eden , which was released in theaters in autumn 2006. To this day Roche continues to write articles for Spex magazine at irregular intervals . Furthermore, she had a supporting role in the horror film Demonium by Andreas Schnaas from 2001.

In 2004 Roche went on a reading tour through Germany with Christoph Maria Herbst - at some appointments with Heinz Strunk - during which they presented excerpts from a dissertation by Michael Alschibaja Theimuras from 1978 on the subject of penis injuries when masturbating with vacuum cleaners . She can be heard as a speaker in the audio book Henry Silver goes to an end . Also in 2005 Roche appeared as a guest musician on the Rocko-Schamoni single Mauern in the “Walls Remix”. A year later she produced a duet with Bela B. entitled 1. 2. 3.… , which appeared on the album Bingo and was also released as a single. Roche also appeared in the accompanying music video.

literature

In February 2008, her novel was published wetlands , where issues such as anal intercourse , intimate hygiene , masturbation techniques , shaven and prostitution are treated provocative, but also addressing the narrator with her parents' divorce is described. According to her, the book, which is 70% autobiographical , advocates less rigid personal hygiene. The book became a bestseller and was the first German-language title to make it to number 1 on the international bestseller list of the online mail order company Amazon . According to the market research company Media Control , the story was sold more than a million times, and the book was also at the top of the literature charts for more than seven months. Wetlands was the best-selling book of 2008 in Germany. Roche's second novel, Schoßgebete , was published on August 10, 2011 by Munich-based Piper Verlag with an initial circulation of 500,000 copies. Both books were also published as audio books, read by the author.

In August 2013, the film adaptation of the book Feuchtgebiete was released in cinemas. The Swiss Carla Juri took on the leading role . Roche was involved in the production of the film insofar as it was responsible for selecting the producer. However, she only read an early version of the script.

From April to July 2018, she wrote the weekly column Now it could hurt for a moment for the Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin Online .

Podcast

From June 2019 to April 2020, Roche and her husband had the weekly podcast Paardiologie .

Confrontation with the Bild newspaper

Before their wedding planned for June 30, 2001 in London , her mother's vehicle had an accident in Belgium . Her three brothers died on the way to the celebration and the mother was seriously injured. A journalist who introduced himself to Roche as a Bild employee is said to have tried to force an interview with her by threatening to otherwise publish a negative report about her. Although Roche refused the interview, there was - at least immediately afterwards - no negative coverage; Rather, Bild denied having anything to do with what happened. Roche, on the other hand, saw itself as a victim of Bild and took action against the newspaper. On February 8, 2006, as a guest at Harald Schmidt's , she wore a dress with an inscription of the URL of the critical watch blog Bildblog . In October 2007 she took part in an image- critical reading.

In connection with the publication of her book Wetlands, Bild also brought headlines on the subject of “What drives you to Shameless Charlotte?” Or “Rich thanks to the sex book - This is how Charlotte Roche disgusts her account”. Among other things, a literary criticism was falsified by Bild , which turned a positive criticism by Roger Willemsen into a negative statement. After reports about her family against her will in 2001, Bild committed another violation of her personal rights in June 2008 . In disregard of the prohibition of publication (actually planned in 2003), a photo of her and her spouse was printed in an article.

feminism

For several years now, Charlotte Roche has been a representative of a new feminist generation. In May 2001 she was featured on the front cover of Emma magazine ; Roche considers some of the viewpoints of classic 1970s feminism - such as the complete rejection of pornography - to be outdated and more of a sex-positive feminism .

“Young feminists must be grateful to Alice Schwarzer for a lot, for example that women no longer have to ask their husbands if they can go to work. But we can no longer go along with many of their new campaigns, such as the demonization of porn. Ms. Schwarzer wants to ban sadomasochistic sex . But women are totally masochistic, and they won't be able to change that either. I don't feel like asking Ms. Schwarzer's permission before I really get started in bed. "
