Copa México 1970/71

The Copa MX 1970/71 was the 29th edition of the football - cup competition since the introduction of professional football in Mexico .

The cup tournament was held following the league round of the 1970/71 season. The 18 teams that were represented in the top division in the same season were eligible to participate . Because the tournament was played in the knockout system and all teams had to compete in the first round, so nine teams qualified for the second round, there was always one in the next rounds due to the constant overhang of one team each Bye . Club León won the cup for the fourth time . Also for the fourth time there was the final meeting between Club León and CD Zacatepec (the most common in professional conditions of the Copa México) . While the Cañeros had the upper hand in 1957 and 1959 , the Esmeraldas were able to prevail this time for the second time after 1958 and draw level with Zacatepec after successes in the direct final balance.

The encounters were played in the knockout system. Because all teams had to compete in the first round, nine teams progressed. In the second round there were four encounters, with the four winners and one team qualifying for the third round by bye. Here there were two encounters and also a team that qualified for the fourth round by bye, the three teams reached. There the CD Zacatepec prevailed in a sporting way against the CD Cruz Azul , while the Club León reached the final by bye.

While the first round matches were played in the first and second legs with one home right each for the two opponents, all other matches were decided in just one game each. The final venue was the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City .

Remarks:

1 The first leg at the Estadio Jalisco from Guadalajara ended 1.1, but was 1: 0 scored for CD Guadalajara.

2 The derby of Torreón was actually held in two different venues. The first leg took place at the Estadio Moctezuma , the regular home ground of Diablos Blancos , and the second leg at the Estadio San Isidro of Ola Verde .

The final was held on October 10, 1971. It was the first goalless final encounter in the meanwhile more than sixty years of existence of this competition (including the amateur phase) and, due to the subsequent penalty shoot-out , in which 19 goals were scored, it was also the highest- scoring final in the history of the Copa México.
