Cordon is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Cordon is at 871  m above Sallanches , about 50 kilometers southeast of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The village extends in a panoramic location with a view of Mont Blanc on the western slope of the Arve Valley , around 300 m above the Sallanches valley basin, in the Savoy Alps at the eastern foot of the Chaîne des Aravis , in the south-east of Faucigny .

The area of ​​the 22.35 km² large municipal area includes a section of the upper Arve valley. The area is bordered to the north by the valley of the Sallanches mountain stream and to the south by that of the Torrent de la Croix. It extends from the slope terrace near Cordon to the west on the ridges of Croix de la Tête and Croix du Planet ( 1826  m ). This is followed by the Croisse Baulet ( 2236  m ) further to the west . A narrow tip extends over the Col de Niard mountain pass into the headwaters of the Arrondine and up to the Tête Pelouse , a summit of the Chaîne des Aravis, on which the highest point of Cordon is reached at 2539  m .

Cordon includes various hamlet and holiday settlements as well as individual farms. Neighboring communities of Cordon are Sallanches in the north and east, La Giettaz in the south and La Clusaz in the west.

history

Traces of settlement by the Allobrogans have been discovered in the municipality of Cordon . The place was first mentioned in a document in the 15th century.

Attractions

The village church Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption, which was built from 1781 to 1787 in the baroque style, is worth seeing . It has a rich interior , including a baroque altar from the 18th century. The Notre-Dame chapel dates from around 1700. In the old town center, various characteristic houses in the Savoyard style have been preserved.

With 973 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Cordon is one of the small communities in the Haute-Savoie department. Since the early 1960s, thanks to the attractive residential area, there has been a significant increase in population. Numerous single-family houses were built outside the town center.

Economy and Infrastructure

Cordon was a predominantly agricultural village well into the 20th century . Today there are various small business enterprises. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, especially in Sallanches and Cluses. In the last few decades, cordon has developed into a resort town. The municipality specializes in both summer tourism and winter tourism (various mountain railways and ski lifts).

The place is well developed in terms of traffic. The main access is from Sallanches; Another road connection exists with Combloux. The closest connection to the A40 motorway is around six km away.
