The GDR Oberliga 1979/80 was the 31st edition of the top division of the GDR . It began on August 18, 1979 and ended on May 10, 1980. The Berlin FC Dynamo defended their title from the previous year and won the second championship with a 1-0 win on the last match day against SG Dynamo Dresden.
Season course
The title fight became a duel between the two Dynamo teams from Dresden and Berlin . Dresden was at the top of the table for 23 match days (from 1st to 18th and from 21st to 25th matchday) and had to be content with second place in the end. On the last day of the match, the BFC successfully defended their title with a 1-0 home win against Dresden.
The runners followed FC Carl Zeiss Jena and 1. FC Magdeburg with ten or twelve points behind the leading duo. Newcomers FC Vorwärts Frankfurt also achieved an excellent fifth place thanks to their third-best away record, ahead of 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig .
The Chemnitzer FC chemistry , who played a good first round (third place), this level could not hold and finished at the end of the seventh rank. This was followed by those teams that had to do with relegation. On the 22nd matchday, the eighth BSG Sachsenring Zwickau only separated four points from the bottom side Chemie Leipzig . Zwickau practically saved itself one game day later with a home win against Jena. The 25th matchday brought BSG Stahl Riesa the final league and for FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt (last of the first half of the season), FC Karl-Marx-Stadt and BSG Wismut Aue a comfortable starting position for the last matchday. After the 0: 6 defeat against BFC, Union was not only two points behind, but also by far the worst goal difference. Dresden sealed the relegation of Leutzscher with a home win against Chemie. This was followed by 1. FC Union Berlin with a defeat in Frankfurt. After 1969 and 1973, the Iron had to compete in the GDR league for the third time .
