history

The Dexter area was surveyed in 1772 and named Township No. 4, Fifth Range North of Waldo Patent (T4 R5 NWP) , however, David Smith was the first to reach the area in 1801. Initially the area was named Elkinstown Plantation . The area was divided up in 1803 and parceled out for other settlers. The grant for the township received in 1804 Amos Bond and eight other shareholders. On June 17, 1816, Dexter was organized as a Town and named after Samuel Dexter .

The Dexter and Newport Railroad was founded in 1853 and connected Dexter with Newport Junction . In 1868, the Newport Junction – Dover-Foxcroft line was established, and in 1888, the Dexter and Piscataquis Railroad . The railway lines are closed today.
