The Dodge Avenger is a front-wheel drive sports coupé produced from 1995 to 2000 by the US car manufacturer Dodge .
The Avenger (" avenger ") was based on the technology of the Mitsubishi Galant and was a product of Diamond Star Motors , a joint venture between Chrysler and Mitsubishi . The technically identical sister model was the Chrysler Sebring , and there was also a technical relationship with the Mitsubishi Eclipse .
At the beginning of 1995 Dodge brought the new Avenger onto the market as a coupé in the so-called cab-forward design , with the passenger cabin moved far forward and a short front end. It differed from the Chrysler Sebring mainly through the typical Dodge design of the front section with the cooling air inlet integrated into the front apron, through a more rounded window line and C-pillar and an independent rear design. In addition, the Avenger was only available as a coupé, while the Sebring was also available as a convertible. The basic version of the Avenger had a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder with two overhead camshafts (142 hp) paired with a five-speed gearbox, the more extensively equipped Avenger ES had a 2.5-liter V6 (157 hp) in conjunction with a four-speed automatic.
In 1996 the output of the V6 was increased to 165 hp. From 1997 the basic and ES versions were equipped with the two-liter engine, the V6 was available for both models at an extra charge. From 1998 there was a sports package that included the V6 engine, 16-inch alloy wheels, a leather steering wheel and a rear spoiler. In addition, the changes during the life of the Avenger were limited to minor details. From model year 1999, the model had ABS as standard .
In the five years of its production, around 160,000 copies of the Avenger were made.
