The Lower Silesian Voivodeship ( Polish województwo dolnośląskie ) is one of the 16 voivodeships of the Republic of Poland . It covers the southwestern part of Poland and borders within the country to the provinces Lebus (north), Greater Poland (Northeast) and Opole (Southeast) and in the southwest on the German and Czech border. The capital is Wroclaw . In the south of the province lies with the Sudeten belonging Giant Mountains one of the most important tourist regions of Poland, in the west - between Queis and Neisse - the Polish part of Lusatia .

The voivodeship was named after the Lower Silesia region.

The Lower Silesian Voivodeship is divided into 26 administrative districts and four independent cities. Although they also form a district under their own name, they do not belong to it themselves. Lower Silesia is also divided into three districts (Administrative Region):

With around 639,000 inhabitants, the provincial capital of Wroclaw is the fourth largest city in the country and by far the largest in the Lower Silesian province.

Voivodeship Marshal has been Cezary Przybylski ( Bezpartyjni Samorządowcy ) since 2014 .

economy

Compared with the GDP of the EU expressed in purchasing power standards , the province reached 2,015 an index of 76 (EU-27 = 100). The unemployment rate in 2005 was 22.8 percent. By December 2009 it had dropped to 12.5 percent.

With a value of 0.865, Lower Silesia ranks 3rd among the 16 Voivodeships of Poland in the Human Development Index .

Partnerships

The Lower Silesian Voivodeship has partnerships with various European regional authorities. These include the German federal states of Lower Saxony and Saxony , the Czech regions Liberecký kraj , Pardubický kraj , Královéhradecký kraj and Olomoucký kraj , Alsace in France, Västmanland in Sweden, Ringkøbing in Denmark, the regions of Dnipropetrovsk and Oblast Kirowohrad in the Ukraine, the Oblast Leningrad in Russia, Emilia-Romagna in Italy, the West Midlands in the United Kingdom, Austrian Styria , the US state Connecticut and the Spanish regions of Castile and León and the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country .

Sports

Nationally known are the soccer clubs Śląsk Wrocław and Zagłębie Lubin , both of which play in the highest Polish league, the Ekstraklasa .

The annual Wroclaw Marathon is also of great importance.
