Death of a Student is a German television film by Ulrich Zrenner from 2018. It is the 75th episode of the crime series A strong team with Florian Martens as Otto Garber and Stefanie Stappenbeck as Linett Wachow as investigative detective agents in the leading roles. Wachow investigates in her 11th case at the side of Garber, for whom it is his 75th assignment. Arnfried Lerche is again there as the superior of the duo and Sebastian Klöckner, played by Matthi Faust , and Jaecki Schwarz as "Sputnik". The main guest stars of this episode are Aglaia Szyszkowitz , Maximilian von Pufendorf , Ludwig Trepte , Amelie Plaas-Link , Johanna Polley and Frederik Schmid .

Main storyline
Katja Hellmann is a psychology student and is known as a loner at the university she attended. In addition to her studies, she works closely with her teaching professor Peter Prochaska, who started an ethically controversial experiment on cognitive dissonance that only Katja is privy to. For months, without the knowledge of her fellow students, she collected data about them, which contained information about their behavior. The psychological experiment aims to show how far people are willing to go in order to achieve their planned goals. For the students this means in concrete terms: to keep their admission to the course and not to fail the exams. For some, their continued existence depends on it. For this reason, Katja selected particularly unstable, financially troubled or family overburdened test subjects.
After a student party, Katja is found dead - killed with a bottle. The detective inspectors Otto Garber, Linett Wachow and Sebastian Klöckner only discover the content of Prochaska's experiment "People in Conflict and Their Reactions" in the course of their arduous investigations. You are sure that this is where the motive for action can be found. Both the students concerned, who were secretly used as test subjects without being asked, and the professor are suspected of murder. When it turns out that Katja had an affair with her married professor and was pregnant by him, his wife is also among the suspects.
Meanwhile, Katja's former friend, Lars Haage, finds out that Katja was beaten to death out of jealousy by her stepsister Claudia Viereg, with whom she lived in a shared apartment. Claudia has always been in the shadow of her sister. When Katja found out that Claudia was secretly in her room and had blackmailed her fellow students on the basis of her notes, which ultimately endangered the experiment, she wanted to hold her accountable. Claudia "had" to prevent this at all costs. Garber and Wachow, whose investigations are now on the same level, can overhear the confession that Haag has just forced out of the perpetrator by force.
Subplot
In this episode, Sputnik reveals how he got his nickname. "Sputnik" is the Russian name for companion, companion or protector. Elisabeth Wegen, a friend, used to call him that. Sputnik , whose role as a businessman in the series is laid out as a running gag , is involved in this episode as a service provider in the police headquarters and provides the officers with a mobile snack bar to take during breaks.

Death of a Student was filmed in Berlin and Brandenburg from October 11 to November 30, 2017 .
The redecorated building at Freiherr-von-Stein-Strasse 1 served as the “Psychological Institute of SU Berlin”; the scenes in the lecture hall were filmed in the Robert Koch Hall, Dorotheenstrasse 96.
The scenes in the country were created in Gröben (Ludwigsfelde) . The place has been known since the series Alone Among Peasants at the latest . The shooting took place at the village church and in the now closed Gasthof Naase.
Katjas and Claudia's flat share was at Bizetstrasse 135, Prochaska's Villa at Kaulbachstrasse 54. The scene of the single father with his son on the sports field was filmed at SV Blau-Weiss Berolina Mitte in Kleine Hamburger Strasse.
The film premiered on ZDF on March 10, 2018 in prime time .

Reviews
Tilmann P. Gangloff gave the film three out of six possible stars on the tittelbach.tv site and said: “For long-time fans of the ZDF classic 'A strong team', the 75th film in the series […] is a must because Finally it is explained how Sputnik got his name and why, unlike his friend and colleague Garber, he was unable to switch to the criminal investigation department after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The crime thriller, on the other hand, is far less interesting, especially since the author Timo Berndt does not use the psychological potential of the story. Even prominent guest actors like Max von Pufendorf or Aglaia Szyszkowitz do not succeed in raising the film above the average of the series. "

On the other hand, the university environment and the dialogues of the academics - as is so often the case on German TV - are almost involuntarily funny. The television magazine Hörzu certified that the film was “successful” and that the investigative work was “as usual”. The episode received one of three possible points for humor and feeling, two for tension and the conclusion: "Exciting investigations in a secretive environment."
