The place name has been formed with the educational element "‑inge-rode". The original meaning of the name of the settlement can be roughly described as "clearing of the people of the NN". This type of place name has been popular in the Harz region. The Elbingerode of the same name, also located in the Harz Mountains in the Saxon-Anhalt town of Oberharz am Brocken , near Wernigerode in the Harz district , is likely to be understood, like the Elbingerode treated here, as the "clearing site of the Athalwin clan".
