The FOM Hochschule (FOM for short, formerly the University of Applied Sciences for Economics and Management ) is a private, state-recognized university with headquarters in Essen , which mainly offers business , engineering and health science courses for professionals and trainees. The sponsor is the non-profit foundation Bildungscentrum der Wirtschaft .

history

In 1990, Essen company and business associations took the initiative to found a private college for professionals and trainees. After it was founded in 1991, the University of Applied Sciences for Economics & Management finally received state recognition in 1993, so that in the winter semester of 1994/95 the course began with 149 students. In the following years, the FOM expanded and study centers were opened at other locations in Germany.

In 2010 the name was changed to FOM Hochschule für Oekonomie & Management , because on the one hand, as part of the Bologna Process in Germany, the degree programs were converted to the two-tier Bachelor / Master system and, with regard to the degrees, no longer between the individual types of university, A distinction was made between those at which the university degree was obtained, and on the other hand, due to developments in the university sector in an international context, the focus could be placed more on scientifically sound training. The renaming did not change anything in the FOM's degree programs and degrees. The FOM logo will also be retained as a trademark.

The FOM University has been a member of the Erasmus program since the 2009/10 winter semester . In January 2012, the FOM College of which was FIBAA systemakkreditiert . In 2018, the FIBAA reaccredited the system for a further eight years, so that, according to the current status, the FOM bears the quality feature "system-accredited university" until the end of the summer semester 2027. Since March 2013, the FOM University has been a member of the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft as part of the quality network for dual studies.

organization

Like the Hessian University of Cooperative Education , the eufom Business School and a number of administrative and business academies , the educational institution is sponsored by the Essen Foundation for the Education Center of the Economy (BCW).

The scientific management consists of the rector and chancellor (also part of the management) as well as four vice-chancellors and three porectors (teaching, research, quality and innovation). There are currently eight deans for the individual subject areas . In addition, the university is advised by an advisory board of the senators . For non-scientific tasks, a management is active at each location, which, however, is subordinate to the overall management based in Essen. Regional study leaders are responsible for the scientific part itself. In addition to the lecturers , contact persons for content are the respective nationwide responsible module leaders. The division into modules is intended to ensure a range of courses that is as uniformly structured as possible and comparable in terms of qualifications. In addition, such interlinking can lower the costs of the courses. According to its own information, the FOM University has more than 470 full-time lecturers and 1500 lecturers. It is not possible to publicly research the exact number of employees at the FOM University who are not active in teaching. This has the background that often employees of the FOM University, as the best-known product of the BCW Group, also work for the other educational institutions. According to its own information, the BCW Group employs more than 1000 people.

eufom Business School of the FOM University

Eufom is the business school of the FOM University and currently offers seven-semester full-time, German-English-language Bachelor programs at nine university centers in Germany. The study concept of the eufom Business School not only provides for the transfer of knowledge, but also aims to promote individual personality development, in particular talents, individual competencies and skills of the students, e.g. B. through personal support from an "Academic Coach", 360 ° feedback discussions or the creation of an individual competence profile for the résumé.

Locations

Germany, Austria

There are a total of 32 university centers in Germany at which many of the courses can be taken - partly in cooperation with other universities: Aachen, Augsburg, Berlin, Bochum, Bonn, Bremen, Dortmund, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Essen, Frankfurt am Main, Gütersloh, Hagen, Hamburg, Hanover, Herne, Karlsruhe, Kassel, Cologne, Leipzig, Mainz, Mannheim, Marl, Munich, Münster, Neuss, Nuremberg, Saarbrücken, Siegen, Stuttgart, Wesel and Wuppertal. The FOM University has also been in Vienna since 2019.

The eufom Business School is located in Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Essen, Frankfurt amMain, Hamburg, Cologne, Munich, Münster and Stuttgart.

China

Since 2003, the university has carried out the German-language degree in business administration at two locations in China . The first study center was in Langfang near Beijing and was a cooperation project with the Shanxi University of Finance & Economics (SUFE). The Bachelor of Business Administration training is now taking place on the SUFE campus in Taiyuan .

The second study center started operations in September 2004 in Taian ( Shandong Province ) in cooperation with the Shandong Agricultural University (SDAU). At this location, too, Chinese students are being prepared for a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in a joint course.

In 2013 the FOM China programs are bundled at the FOM German-Sino School of Business & Technology. Around 2,000 Chinese students are currently enrolled at the German-Sino School. More than 4,000 graduates are now active in the German and Chinese business environment.

Course offer

The course is structured in a similar way to that at state universities, which means that it is divided into semesters . The course is based on the guidelines of the Bologna Process , so that there is a strong structure for both teachers and students. Lectures take place in face-to-face form without being required.

costs

In its statement on reaccreditation, the Science Council summarized that the tuition fees amount to an average of 12,690 euros for a bachelor's degree and 11,410 euros for a master’s degree or 13,810 euros for an MBA degree (as of 2015). The total costs result from monthly installments between 295 and 495 euros. In addition, the FOM charges additional one-off costs, e.g. B. for exam registration for the thesis or fees for the university certificate. A scholarship system does not exist. In practice, employers often contribute to the costs.

FOM college

In order to be able to reach the target group of working people, most of the events take place during the week in the evening and on Saturday. Depending on the place of study and needs, individual courses are also offered in the form of a day study (two days a week, all day). For employed people, the bachelor's degree at the FOM University takes seven semesters. For employed people, the master’s degree at the FOM University takes four to five semesters, depending on the course.

The courses are organized in so-called university areas:

  • University of Economics & Management
  • University of Economics & Psychology
  • University of Economics & Law
  • University IT Management
  • Higher education engineering
  • University Health & Social Affairs
  • University sector Open University

In addition, the FOM offers a dual course of study with different model orientations. For example, the model of the training-integrated dual degree program is offered, in which graduates not only acquire a university degree (Bachelor), but also a professional qualification.

Another special area is the "Open University". The focus here is on the permeability between vocational and academic education, with the aim of ensuring that vocational qualifications or competencies that have already been acquired can be credited towards a degree through professional training. In concrete terms, this means that study time and tuition fees can be saved.

eufom Business School of the FOM University

The FOM's eufom Business School offers seven-semester bachelor's degree programs with an economic basis and an international focus for (technical) high school graduates. The course is a full-time course.

The courses:

  • International Business Management
  • Business Psychology
  • Marketing & Digital Media
  • Law & Digital Business

research

In contrast to the organizational structure at, for example, traditional state universities, the FOM is not organized in a typical chair or subject structure. As a result, professors have no academic staff and are not obliged to conduct research, but rather have to fulfill their teaching duties according to the contractual arrangement. However, since research is one of the so-called service tasks of a university of applied sciences, the FOM also regards research as a strategic goal. As a result, since the founding of research facilities, the institutes and competence centers of the FOM, professors have been able to establish themselves in an application-oriented research landscape within the framework of own and third-party funding. They are supported by a professional research management team, the Research Support Department . Its tasks include the handling of administrative processes so that the researchers can concentrate primarily on the respective research areas of a specialist nature. The university provides an annual research report in which its own information on the individual research achievements is published.

Scientific institutions and institutes

The university maintains a total of 11 research institutes and 15 "competence centers":
