The Schleswig-Holstein Association League was held for the 33rd time in the 1979/80 season and formed the substructure of the third-class Oberliga Nord. The two first-placed teams were allowed to take part in the promotion round to the Oberliga Nord. The teams in the last two places had to relegate to the national league.

Compared to the 1978/79 season , the composition of the league changed as follows: No team was up in the Oberliga Nord, while 1. FC Phoenix Lübeck was relegated from the Oberliga Nord after one season. The three relegated members had left the association league and were replaced by the two promoted VfL Bad Schwartau and Büdelsdorfer TSV , both of whom returned to the association league after one season.

Season course

VfR Neumünster secured the championship and participation in the promotion round. Eutin 08 was also allowed to take part in second place. Neumünster finished his group in second place behind Lüneburger SK and Eutin his group in second place behind Hummelsbütteler SV , which meant that both of them missed the promotion. The FC Union Neumünster had to leave the association league after six years, while Flensburg 08 had to relegate for the first time from the highest amateur league in Schleswig-Holstein.
