The team qualified for the World Cup in South Africa through the qualifying games of the South American football association CONMEBOL .
All ten teams that belonged to the South American association CONMEBOL played against each other in a single group stage with a home and away leg, with a total of 18 matches. The four best-placed teams qualified directly for the finals of the 2010 World Cup, with the fifth-placed team competing against the fourth-placed team from the CONCACAF qualification for a final place. Argentina rose directly to the finals in fourth.
