The Bronnzell district is located on the right eastern bank of the Fulda in East Hesse, about five kilometers south of the city center. On the other bank it also includes the smaller district of Ziegel , about 2 km southwest of the town center, where the Fliede flows into the Fulda from the south as a left tributary.

The highest elevation of the district is in the southwest on the edge of the forest northeast of the Nippelskuppe (420 m) at an altitude of about 350 meters. In the east, the district on the western slope of Gehrenberg (327 m) extends up to around 310 meters, almost to Schloss Fasanerie in Eichenzell . The district is used for agriculture except for a few small forest areas along the borders.

The Bronnzell district belongs to the territory that was founded in 743 by the Franconian caretaker Karlmann dem St. Boniface was given for the foundation of the Fulda Monastery, the so-called Karlmann donation . Bronnzell (from Latin proxima cella , i.e. the cell closest to the Fulda monastery) is mentioned for the first time in 778 by the Fulda abbot Eigil , after Boniface dedicated 34 years earlier to St. Sturmius gave the order to build a Benedictine monastery in the Fulda settlement area.

In the Turkish tax register of the abbey of Fulda from 1605 the place is mentioned under the name Bromzell with 28 families.

In 1815, Bronnzell and the Grand Duchy of Fulda came to the Electorate of Hesse . At the end of 1850, a constitutional crisis in the electorate led to military intervention by foreign powers. On November 8, 1850, a battle between Bavarian-Austrian and Prussian troops who faced each other near Bronnzell almost broke out. In the end, only the well-known white horse from Bronnzell was killed. On the 150th anniversary, the Schimmeldenkmal was unveiled in the village.

As part of the regional reform in Hesse , the municipality of Bronnzell was incorporated into the independent city of Fulda at the same time as other suburban municipalities on August 1, 1972 by virtue of state law , but came back to the Fulda district on July 1, 1974 together with it.
