Gegensteine-Schierberg is a nature reserve in the town of Ballenstedt in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0157 is around 102  hectares in size. It is practically congruent with the FFH area "Gegensteine ​​und Schierberge bei Ballenstedt". The area has been under protection since 1998 (date of regulation: March 4, 1998). The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Harz district.

The nature reserve is located north of Ballenstedt in the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt nature reserve . The nature reserve, which extends to the Ballenstedt district of Rieder to the west, includes the Gegensteine and Schierberg mountain ranges as the eastern foothills of the Teufelsmauer and part of the Steinberge east of the Roseburg . It places natural forest communities, dry and semi-dry lawns , dwarf shrub heaths , dry shrubbery and orchards as well as small, abandoned quarries under protection. At the same time, it serves to protect the rock formations characteristic of the northern Harz rim.

The southern slopes of the Stone Mountains and the opposite stones are of species-rich Furchenschwingel- Fiederzwenken taken -Halbtrockenrasen. Here grow u. a. Danish tragacanth , the orchid species Herbstwortwurz and the three gentian species Feld-Kranzian , German fringed gentian and common fringed gentian . Meadowsweet meadow oat communities with real meadow oats , common heather , small hawkweed and ornamental blue grass can also be found on the acidic soil on the south-facing slope . On shallow sites over Cretaceous sandstone of Gegensteine and Schier Bergs settle thyme sheep fescue societies, on rankers milkweed heather moorland that is strong vergrast part by Schlängelschmiele. Occurrences of cruciferous grass turf provide an indication of past grazing in the area. Parts of the nature reserve are slowly becoming bushy, z. B. with hawthorn and dog roses. As part of maintenance measures in the nature reserve, dekussel measures are carried out to counteract the encroachment. In the deciduous forests in the nature reserve there is the largest contiguous Märzenbecher on the edge of the Harz.

The nature reserve is the habitat of various species of birds adapted to the location , including red kite , honey buzzard , all native woodpecker species , wryneck , red-backed red- backed warbler , barnacles and stonechat . The dry, warm locations also offer warmth-loving insects and reptiles a suitable habitat. Even greater mouse-eared and Barbastelle are native here.

There is a viewing platform on the Großer Gegenstein . Climbing on the rock formations is prohibited; For the north side of the Großer Gegenstein, permits for climbing can be issued on request from the Upper Nature Conservation Authority. A visitor control system is provided for tourist use.

The nature reserve is largely surrounded by agricultural land . In the west it borders on the residential areas of Rieder. The part of the area on the Steinberge borders on Landesstraße 242.
