history

Until the church is planted

In Graefendorf, the barons of Thüngen and the Würzburg Juliusspital shared power. In the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss 1803 the Würzburg rights fell to Bavaria , 1805 to the Principality of Aschaffenburg , the Thüngischen rights were exchanged for the Grand Duchy of Frankfurt after the mediatization by Aschaffenburg in 1808 . In 1813 the place finally became Bavarian . In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria, today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .

Religions

The Catholic parish of St. Wolfgang in the Wolfsmünster district is the mother parish for the entire lower Saale valley . In 802, Abbot Baugulf built a cella from the Fulda monastery . The parish of Wolfsmünster currently has the branches of St. Martin in Michelau, St. Laurentius in Schonderfeld, St. John the Baptist in Weickersgrüben, Maria Patrona Bavariae in Aschenroth and St. Jakobus the Elder in Seifriedsburg. Aschenroth and Seifriedsburg are politically part of the city of Gemünden am Main . In 1408 the independent parish of Holy Guardian Angels was established in Graefendorf. In 1966/67 a new parish church was built there. The parishes of Wolfsmünster and Graefendorf belong to the Karlstadt deanery of the Würzburg diocese .

Both Gräfendorf and Weickersgrüben belonged to the Thüngen area during the Reformation and became Lutheran in the first half of the 16th century. After a change of ownership, both places were re-Catholicized. In Gräfendorf, Catholic services were held again in 1677. The Evangelical Lutheran parish of Gräfendorf with the Michaelskirche from 1952 belongs to the parish of Gemünden am Main today, the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Weickersgrüben with the Church of the Resurrection from 1961 to the parish of Höllrich. Both parishes belong to the Lohr deanery of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria . With the construction of the own Protestant church in Weickersgrüben, the simultaneum that had existed up to that point was dissolved.
