In addition, Dr. Knox made a guest appearance in one episode. Dr. Knox resigned in season two and will appear later in other seasons. The names of the English and German versions are identical with two exceptions: Meredith's stepmother is called Susan in the English version, not Eileen. And while Dr. Mark Sloan gets the nickname McSexy in the German version, he is called McSteamy in the English version - based on Derek's nickname McDreamy.

Izzie can't deal with Denny's death and lies on the bathroom floor in a ball gown. All friends take turns trying to comfort her and get her to stand up. Two plague patients are admitted to the hospital and Miranda devotedly takes care of the husband, whose wife does not survive the operation. Because of the quarantine, George and Derek have to stay in the lounge. Adele gives Richard the choice of either quitting his job or she would leave him. Richard chooses the hospital. Addison discovered Meredith's panties in Derek's suit and pinned them to the hospital bulletin board. Derek admits to Meredith that he still loves her and that his decision to join Addison was the wrong one. After Finn also wants to be with Meredith, she faces a difficult decision.

Meredith can't choose between Derek and Finn. She wants to take turns going out with both of them to see who is a better fit for her. Preston is visited by his parents. Miranda encourages her and wants to ensure that Izzie can work in the hospital again, because she realizes that she, too, had failed as a trainer. Addison takes a day off to get drunk over relationship problems. Derek wants to end his relationship with Addison for good, but also apologizes to her about Meredith's underpants. He catches her in her hotel room with Mark. George is jealous because he thinks the briefs on the bulletin board are from Callie. Richard notices Callie's sleeping place in the hospital catacombs and has to ask her to move out. Callie finds shelter with Meredith, Izzie and George. Alex has sex with an elderly cancer patient who wants to enjoy her life all over again.

Alex takes care of a girl who is seriously injured because she feels no pain and believes she is a superhero. Preston is taking leave for rehab, which Cristina doesn't like. Little does she know that Preston's hand is still shaking. Izzie wants to talk to Richard and get back to work, but stays in front of the hospital all day because she can't bring herself to go inside. George can't cope with Callie living with him. That's why Callie checks in at the hotel. Meredith has dates with Finn and Derek, but they are more concerned with outdoing each other than taking care of Meredith.

Meredith has to have an operation for her appendix and is high from the pain medication, so she tells everyone exactly what she thinks. Derek releases Meredith because he thinks Finn is the better man for her. Meredith separates from Finn anyway and chooses Derek. Preston confesses to Christina that he is still suffering from a tremor . Callie is mad at George, who cares more about his friends than she does. She starts flirting with Mark. Izzie meets with Denny's father, who questions her about Denny when Denny gave Izzie a check for $ 8.7 million. She also receives the number of her parents' answering machine, where Denny left a message shortly before his death in which he raves about Izzie. Addison and Alex perform an emergency caesarean section, after which Addison releases Alex from his duties in the gynecology ward. He wants to get into plastic surgery with Dr. Mark Sloan, who, to Addison and Derek's annoyance, is now permanent at the hospital.

Meredith fails to tell Derek that she broke up with Finn. When she finally overcomes herself, Derek shows no emotion. In the course of the divorce negotiations, Addison had told him shortly beforehand that he had had a long affair with Mark. Izzie hasn't cashed Denny's check because she wants to use the money for a good cause. She wants to empty her locker in the hospital, but watches an operation in which Cristina intervenes to hide the trembling of Preston's hand. Then Izzie decides to go back and talks to Richard. Callie cheated on George with Mark, but fails to tell George the truth. Instead, she breaks up with him. Miranda has to deal with allegations made by other hospital doctors about her behavior in Denny's case.

On Izzie's first day back at the hospital, she is assigned to Meredith. Izzie is actually only supposed to observe and is not allowed to contact patients, but through her sensitivity she reveals that a patient has inflicted a burn on herself in order not to have to take an exam. Alex is officially assigned to Mark, but only has to take over telephone services for him. So he turns to a case in gynecology that actually belongs to George. Alex intervenes to save them at the crucial moment. Derek's sister is in Seattle to visit him and meets Meredith. She encourages Derek to give himself the space to reflect, which Meredith also gives him. Cristina and Burke are a good team in the operating room. She intervenes when the trembling makes him unable to continue and organizes everything for him. To hide Preston's weakness, she crosses Miranda's name off the OP list. Miranda initially thinks Preston would doubt her abilities, but soon suspects Cristina.

Derek wants to go on a camping trip and invites Preston to do so. In the end, Richard, George, Alex and the homosexual couple Joe and Walter also ride . When Alex tells George that Callie slept with Mark, they both start a fight. George also notices the tremor in Preston's hand while fishing . In the hospital, Cristina is only assigned to work as a nurse, as Miranda noticed that it was Cristina who had removed her name from the board. Cristina hides the reason from Miranda in order to continue protecting Preston. Izzie gets Dr. Sydney assigned to Heron, whose nature she doesn't get along with. Callie and Addison treat a pregnant patient who fell in the shower. You have to tell her that her baby died in the process. This welds Addison and Callie together. Meredith is assigned to Mark and is performing a sex change operation with him. Callie informs George upon his return that his father has been hospitalized. Meredith and Derek want to make a fresh start.

George's father, who was actually admitted with a broken collarbone, is diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Since his heart would be too weak for the operation, it has to be operated on first. Callie tries to look after George's family, but he lets them down. Through a little patient who is raised by a nanny instead of her working parents, Miranda also realizes how little time she can spend with her son through her job. Addison finally breaks up with Derek and separates from the wedding rings. Izzie is assigned to Alex, who lets her perform an unauthorized procedure on a patient to do her a favor. This brings them closer together, but Izzie is not ready to start a new relationship yet. Richard tells Meredith that he won't be able to visit Ellis in the future because he wants to fight for his marriage.

George worries his father as a doctor Dr. Hahn, knowing about Preston's tremor . Cristina panics that George might tell Richard about it. There is a heated argument between Preston and Cristina and Preston clearly puts her in her place in the operating room. Richard wants to retire and make Preston the new chief physician. Cristina can no longer withstand the pressure and betrays Preston to Richard. Then everyone learns of their cheating. Izzie and George also get into an argument, but between Addison and Alex it crackles.

Meredith is assigned to Addison and is treating her half-sister, who still does not know that Meredith is related to her, during a caesarean section. The baby is not breathing and needs an operation. Eileen wants Meredith to be part of her family, but Meredith distances herself. Cristina is cut by all resident doctors except Meredith. Richard announces that Cristina and Preston face no further consequences. V. a. Miranda, because Izzie is still not allowed to practice as a doctor because of Denny. Doctors are busy separating adult Siamese twins. Derek initially refuses to perform the difficult operation because he has doubts about his own abilities because of Preston's tremor . The operation finally succeeds, as does Dr. Hahn's heart surgery on George's father. Preston finally has Derek examine his shoulder.

Meredith notices that Derek doesn't sleep by her side at night because she snores. Preston has had an operation by Derek and Cristina wants to know if the tremor has gone. But she doesn't want to ask Preston because otherwise she would break the mutual silence. George's father asks Miranda and Richard to continue with his surgery even after the cancer has spread. The operation seems to be well over at first, which means that George and Callie get closer again. Izzie wants to be present at the operation of a young patient who has severe scoliosis due to the VATER syndrome . But Miranda demands of her that she finally has to cash the check beforehand, which Izzie finally does with a heavy heart. The operation is canceled anyway because the insurance does not want to pay for the operation. Alex wants to be trained by Addison again because Dr. Sloan only uses him to run errands. Addison and Alex get closer.

This loss makes it clear to Meredith that she shouldn't ignore her father, who is constantly in the hospital because of the sick baby of Meredith's half-sister. She talks to him and realizes that she inherited the snoring from him. After Alex got out of the way of Addison, Addison kisses him in Joe's bar. Addison also tells Callie that she was pregnant with Mark but had an abortion in the hope of staying with Derek. The calculated due date would have fallen on that day. Izzie anonymously donates $ 300,000 to the girl with scoliosis so that the surgery can be performed successfully. Cristina comforts George: she also lost her father when she was only nine years old. Preston tells Derek in front of Cristina that his hand has not been shaking for a week.

Richard wants to retire to go back to Adele. Mark has actually made up his mind to go back to New York, but when he hears of Richard's plans, he, like Derek, Preston and Addison, senses the chance to become chief physician. Richard doesn't like the jostling, so he doesn't see a worthy successor at the moment. Instead, he tells Miranda that he is certain that she will make it to the chief doctor one day. When Richard wants to tell Adele that he is going to retire, he learns that Adele now has another husband. Miranda prevails by setting up a welfare station in the hospital. However, since she lacks the necessary money, Izzie finally sees the chance to do something good with Denny's legacy. She donates her eight million dollars and names the station after Denny. George tries to get over his father's death by constantly having sex with Callie. Cristina and Preston still don't talk to each other, but finally Cristina gives in. Preston then makes her a marriage proposal - as does George, who asks for Callie's hand. Addison avoids Alex in the bar about the kiss until he tells her he's not interested anyway.

Ellis Gray has a clear day and can remember everything - apart from the past five years. When she found out about her Alzheimer's disease, she was hospitalized with a heart problem. She should be operated on the next day. Meredith and Richard take care of her, but Meredith in particular cannot enjoy the time because her mother is disappointed with her development and describes her as ordinary. Cristina accepts Preston's marriage proposal after long hesitation. George and Callie got married head over heels in Las Vegas, which Izzie in particular thinks is a big mistake. But George stands up for his wife and defends her. Izie's and Miranda's welfare station is open, but they only treat one patient on the first day. Addison and Mark go back to their old habits. George feels nauseous in the hospital and says he had a panic attack because of the marriage, but then finds out that it is a patient's blood that is toxic. In doing so, he saves the lives of many doctors who fainted during the patient's surgery.

Derek realizes that something is wrong with Meredith because he has to pull her out of the bathtub in which she was submerged that morning. Richard dyed his hair to make it more popular with women. Dr. Heron competes with Miranda for the post of ward doctor, which is to be filled soon. Cristina can't get around to telling Meredith about her engagement, as all of the interns except Cristina are called to a ferry accident. Alex rescues a pregnant woman there who has been buried. George struggles with a woman who refuses to be treated until her son has been found. Izzie takes care of a man who was crushed by a car in the shipwreck. Meredith takes care of a girl who has lost her mother and a seriously injured man. During the treatment, he panics and pushes Meredith into the water. Meredith doesn't reappear.

Alex takes care of the victims' relatives. George searches for his patient's son all day and finally finds him on Callie's operating table. Izzie saves the life of the man trapped in the shipwreck. Richard will suspend her probationary period when she returns to the hospital so that she can practice again. The girl shows Derek that Meredith fell into the water. Derek can save Meredith, but she is very hypothermic and has no heartbeat. In the hospital, all the doctors try to resuscitate Meredith, but her heartbeat refuses to start again. She wakes up in a different dimension at the hospital where she meets Denny and the late bomb expert Dylan.

The doctors continue to fight to save Meredith's life. In her near-death experience , she meets Denny and Dylan, the nurse Liz, who died of cancer, the euthanized dog Doc and Bonnie, who was pierced by a pole in the train accident. Everyone tries to make it clear to her that she has to decide whether to live or die. To do this, she has to admit to herself why she did not fight for her life in the water but stopped swimming. By the time she decides to live, it's almost too late. But then she meets her mother, who has since died of heart failure. Ellis says goodbye to her daughter and tells her that she is anything but ordinary. Then Meredith returns to life. Cristina immediately tells her about her engagement to Preston. The patient who rescued Alex has memory loss and cannot even remember her name. Mark continues to seek Addison, who gives him an ultimatum: If he can go 60 days without sex, she will consider a relationship with him.

Meredith has since recovered. Her stepmother Eileen wants to take care of her and invites her to have dinner with her father Thatcher. The relationship between father and daughter remains tense. Alex moves in with Meredith and Izzie after George and Callie live at the hotel. Callie confidently tells George that she has a lot of money and isn't happy that George told Izzie and Meredith. They get into an argument in which Callie tells George that she thinks Izzie has feelings for him. When George replies that a woman as beautiful as Izzie will never feel anything for him, Callie throws him out. George gets drunk with Izzie and they both end up in bed. Richard negotiates with Dr. Colin Marlow as his possible successor. As it turns out, Cristina had a longstanding relationship with him during her student days. Preston wonders whether Cristina is abusing him as a new mentor, v. a. when she confesses that she only wants to marry him to do him a favor. The senior physicians advise trying to find Dr. Impressing Marlow, always fighting.

At first, George can't remember spending the night with Izzie. When he remembers it, he decides not to tell Callie so as not to ease his conscience at her expense. Callie's father comes to visit and wants to buy a house and more for George and Callie. George stands up to him, which Callie is proud of. Cristina wants to have a wedding, but only in the smallest circle. Mark operates on the disfigured face of the unknown woman Alex calls Ava. During the operation, Mark Meredith undergoes a difficult procedure to impress Richard and score points in the race for chief medical officer. Dr. Marlow wants to impress the panel with a 10-year plan for the hospital. Only Mark cleverly keeps one step ahead. Derek's interview, on the other hand, is going badly because he is still worried about Meredith and cannot understand why she no longer wanted to live. Ava finds that Addison is attracted to Alex.

Izzie's daughter Hannah's adoptive parents approach Izzie for a bone marrow donation because Hannah has leukemia . Izzie is overwhelmed with the situation and is supported by George. But George neglects Callie again and lies to her about a missed meeting. Possible parents of the unknown patient have contacted us, but despite the great similarity, the mother realizes that Ava cannot be her daughter. Cristina tries to find Dr. To put Marlow in their place and show him that she actually loves Preston. When Marlow realizes that the purely selfish Cristina he came for no longer exists, he packs his things. Mark gives flirting lessons to Richard, who is completely out of practice. Eileen still takes great care of Meredith, for whom contact is becoming too close. Richard also wants to protect Meredith by not giving Derek the boss. Derek is increasingly torn between Meredith and his career.

All interns study for the important intermediate examination. George and Izzie try to mend their friendship. When Callie asks Izzie to stay away from George, and Izzie pushes George back because of it, George wants to be transferred to Mercy West. Addison and Alex have sex. Addison wants a serious relationship, but Alex isn't interested. He is more interested in Ava, who gives birth to her baby via emergency caesarean section. Mark notices that Addison doesn't want him. That's why he lies to her that he couldn't meet the 60-day deadline. Meredith tries to open up to Derek more and talk to him a lot, but Derek pulls back and questions the relationship more and more. The chairman of the board, Larry Jennings, needs treatment for catching a candirú as a parasite while swimming in the Amazon . Preston is busy choosing a wedding cake, but Cristina is more interested in getting Callie's iconic flash cards.

Eileen comes to the hospital because of persistent hiccups. Meredith is forced to talk to her father more and is getting on better and better with him. After receiving treatment from Miranda, Eileen is released. Cristina and Preston's mothers have come to Seattle to organize a big wedding. Cristina, who had only arranged a small wedding with Preston, is completely taken by surprise. Izzie, Callie and Meredith become bridesmaids and help Cristina try on the wedding dress. Meredith asks Derek not to give her up as she feels positively changed after her afterlife experience. After being rejected by Alex, Addison takes a break and drives to Los Angeles to see her friend Naomi. During her stay, she met many of the staff in Naomi's private practice and supported her friend on a case. In addition, Addison wants a baby and therefore wants to have artificial insemination performed, but Naomi has to inform her that Addison's menopause has occurred.

Eileen is hospitalized again. She is being treated, but her condition is rapidly deteriorating. She dies in the emergency operation. Thatcher blames Meredith for it and slaps her. Derek wants to comfort Meredith, but she pushes him back again. Izzie doesn't want George to move to Mercy West. The two kiss in the elevator. Ava has a bleeding in her brain that Derek is operating on. She hopes that this will help her regain her memory. The operation shows that Ava speaks a number of languages, but her memory does not return afterwards. In Los Angeles, Addison takes a liking to Pete. Though Naomi tries to poach Addison, Addison eventually returns to Seattle.

It is the day of Eileen's funeral and the important exam for the interns. Meredith is intercepted in the hospital in the morning by Thatcher, who does not want to see her at the funeral because he still blames her for the death of his wife. Meredith is so disturbed that she gives the test unprocessed. Again she doesn't tell Derek anything and excludes him. When George supports Richard for Meredith, she is allowed to repeat the test. George got an acceptance from Mercy West, but has to pass the exam. Richard and Miranda don't think it's good that George wants to leave the higher quality education at Seattle Grace. Callie, however, is looking forward to it because George would be separated from Izzie among other things. Izzie lies to George by telling him that he doesn't have to switch because of her, as she has no feelings for him. When Ava chatted away, Alex realizes that she has apparently regained her memory. Her name is Rebecca Pope, had an unhappy marriage and wanted to start a new life. Miranda is certain that she will be a ward doctor, but has doubts when she learns that Callie has also applied. Joe and Walter want to adopt a child. As it turns out, the surrogate mother is expecting twins. In addition, Adele comes to the hospital after a rear-end collision. She is pregnant but doesn't want Addison to tell Richard about it. When Adele hides from Richard in the ladies' room, he finally finds her unconscious and with abdominal bleeding. Derek flirts with a woman at Preston's bachelorette party at Joe's bar.

The interns are informed of their examination results. George has failed and wants to give up his job. In addition, Callie surprised him with the wish for a baby and Izzie surprised him with a declaration of love. The new interns are coming to Seattle Grace. It turns out the woman Derek met at the bar was Dr. Lexie Gray, Meredith's sister. Addison can save Adele's life, but not her baby. Adele then tells Richard that it was his son. The two get closer again. Richard has an interview with every senior physician about the position of chief physician. He decides for Derek, but he refuses on the grounds that Richard himself is still the best man for the job. Derek confesses to Meredith that she is the love of his life, but Meredith evades him again. Rebecca's husband comes to the hospital. She asks Alex to give her a reason to stay with him, but he hesitates. When he chooses her, it is too late and she has already left. Miranda doubts her abilities after Callie has been appointed ward doctor. Cristina's wedding day is approaching and Preston's mother tries to make a different person out of her, not just visually. When everyone is gathered in the church, Cristina hesitates at first. When she decides to step in front of the altar, Preston notices her uncertainty. He decides not to marry her. Because if he loved her for who she is, he wouldn't have forced her to this wedding. When Cristina returns home, Preston has taken all of his personal valuables from the apartment.
