This page describes the qualification for the 2010 European Handball Championship for men.
qualification
mode
At the EHF Congress in Vilamoura in Portugal in 2006 it was decided to introduce a new qualification mode for European championships. This was officially adopted on January 26, 2008 at the 9th EHF Congress in Lillehammer ( Norway ).
Only the host ( Austria ) and the defending champion ( Denmark ) are directly qualified . All other nations must qualify for the tournament in a group system.
A total of 36 national teams - besides Austria and Denmark - registered for the qualifying round. These were divided into 7 groups at the draw on April 18, 2008, with one group with 6 teams and 6 groups with 5 teams. The teams now played a return match against each group opponent. The first two in each group qualified for the EM.
Initially, Georgia and Moldova also reported . Both nations later withdrew their participation.
