Hartenstein was first referred to as a town in 1378 and is said to have been founded by the Meinheringer who built Hartenstein Castle in the county of Hartenstein along the trade route from Zwickau to Bohemia in the 12th century . The city then came under the sovereignty of the Burgraves of Meißen , was pledged to the Lords of Schönburg in 1406 and became their property in 1414. They and the lower county remained with them when the upper part of the county of Hartenstein was bought by the Saxons in 1559 .

From 1701 the city was the main town of the Schönburg-Hartenstein rule , a line of the princes of Schönburg , until after the recess with the House of Wettin in 1740 it finally came under Electoral Saxon rule. (One line of the princely family carried the family name Schönburg-Hartenstein until the 20th century.)

1921 Hartenstein went into the history of puppetry: BEST from Bad Ems Dating Max Jacob , a member of the Wandervogel movement , founded the Hartensteiner puppet shows ; after the puppet company moved to nearby Hohnstein , it became world famous under the name Hohnsteiner Puppet Games. The founding place of this important puppet theater is Hartenstein.

Hartenstein Castle, which was converted into a palace , was almost completely destroyed in an American bombing raid on April 20, 1945. In the vicinity of Hartenstein is the Prinzenhöhle , a scene in the Saxon prince robbery .
