    speaker

The Speaker of the House of Assembly of Dominica is responsible for the management and general administration of Parliament as well as for compliance with the rules of procedure. The speaker is chosen by the members of parliament at the first constituent session after a parliamentary election, whereby the speaker does not have to be an elected member of the House of Assembly beforehand . If a member of the House of Assembly is elected as speaker, he can only cast a casting vote to avoid a stalemate . If a person who was not previously a member of parliament is elected as speaker, he or she will become a member of the House of Assembly by election, but may not cast an original vote or a decisive vote to avoid a standoff.

The current Speaker of the House of Assembly is Alix Boyd Knights , who has held this office since April 17, 2000, the longest term in Dominica's history .
