Jan Odle (* 1964 ; actually Ian Kupferberg-Odle ) is an American , German-speaking voice actor , dialog book author and dubbing director .

life and work

Jan Odle was invited to dubbing by an acquaintance of his parents, namely the established dubbing actor and director Donald Arthur , when he was five years old , so he already gained a lot of experience in front of the microphone in his childhood.

After finishing school, he decided to work full-time as a voice actor. Since then, he has particularly appreciated the versatility of this occupation, as you can slip into different roles up to six times a day. In the meantime he has also established himself as a dialog book author and dubbing director and as such works primarily for Munich dubbing studios, occasionally he also has assignments in Berlin studios.

synchronization

Odle was offered his first major series lead role at the age of 14 for the animated series Sindbad and was thus heard as Sindbad from 1978 to 1979 on the ZDF afternoon program every week. A year later he spoke to Tom Sawyer in the Canadian television series The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn , which first aired from 1980 to 1981. In the mid-1980s it was often cast for young Afro-American actors, as the dubbing directors of that time demanded a shrill, 'squeaky' voice to typify these characters (so-called charging ) and Jan Odle met these requirements. For example, he lent his voice to the rapper Darren Robinson from the Fat Boys in the comedy Das Chaoten-Team (1988), as did Reginald VelJohnson in Scott & Huutsch (1990), Gilbert Gottfried in Kuck mal, wer da speaks 2 (1990) or Ice-T in Ricochet - The Impact (1992).

He has been known as the German voice of Will Smith since the German broadcast of the US comedy series Der Prinz von Bel-Air , which was broadcast on RTL plus from November 1992 . The dialogue director in charge, Arne Elsholtz , decided on Jan Odle as the main role, with whom he had already worked in 1988 on the German voice recordings for the US sitcom Throb , where he dubbed Richard Cummings Jr. At first, Will Smith's films looked to change the cast of the German voice in order to distance himself from the comedy genre, but since the blockbuster Men in Black (1997) he has been considered Smith's fixed voice. Also for the comedian and actor Anthony Anderson Odle has been cast recurring since 2000, whom he first spoke in the action film Romeo Must Die , including in the last three seasons of the crime series Law & Order (2009-2011) as Detective Bernard. Since the successful heist movie comedy Ocean's Eleven (2001) he has been dubbing Bernie Mac , including in 3 Angels for Charlie - Full Power (2003) and Transformers (2007).

However, Jan Odle was entrusted with the synchronization of film leading actors since the mid-1980s. He was in the comedies Police Academy 2 (1985); Part 3 (1986), Part 4 (1987) for Bobcat Goldthwait and in Bill & Ted's Crazy Journey to the Future (1992) for Alex Winter . He lent his voice to well-known actors such as Keanu Reeves in The Prince of Pennsylvania (1989), Kiefer Sutherland in the coat-and-rapier film The Three Musketeers (1994), Christian Slater in Interview with a Vampire (1994), Robert Downey Jr. in the John Grisham film Gingerbread Man (1998), Matt Dillon in the thriller Albino Alligator (1998) and Rufus Sewell in Arabian Nights (2000). He also dubbed Djimon Hounsou in The Island (2005), Brad William Henke in The Zodiac Killer (2006) and Luis Guzmán in The Abduction of the Pelham 123 Subway (2009).

His voice was also present in television series before his popular role as Prince of Bel-Air (1992–1997). From 1989 to 1992 he spoke to the motorcycle police officer "Ponch" Poncherello in CHiPs . He was heard from 1995 to 1996 as Highlander's mortal friend Charlie DeSalvo and from 1998 to 1999 as Donatello in the teen action series The Ninja Turtles and as the shy elephant Hathi in the US Disney animated series The Jungle Book Kids . This was followed by other comic characters , whom he lent his voice, including Cliff in CatDog (1999-2004), Oscar Proud in The Prouds (2002-2003) and Peter Griffin in Family Guy (since 2002). He also dubbed Ted in the film of the same name and its sequel .

Dialogue script and direction

Odle gained his first experience as a dialogue book author and dubbing director in the 1990s, and since 2000 he has worked regularly as such for the Munich film and television dubbing studio. For example, he was responsible for the German dubbed versions of the animated film South Park: The Film - Bigger, Longer, Uncut (2000), the comic book adaptation Scooby-Doo (2002), the mystery thriller FearDotCom (2003), and the British horror film The Descent des horror (2005), the thriller Disturbia (2007), the horror remake The Last House on the Left (2009), the US comedy Gentlemen Broncos (2010), the British-American period film The Eagle of the Ninth Legion (2011) , the science fiction western Cowboys & Aliens (2011), the adventure film The Journey to the Mysterious Island (2012), the US comedy We Are the Millers (2013) and Marc Forster's blockbuster World War Z (2013).

But he also wrote the German dialogues for other dubbing studios in Munich and Berlin and directed the voice recordings, including for the action thriller Training Day (2001), in which Denzel Washington's performance was awarded an Oscar, the animal-speaking live-action comedy Cats & Dogs (2001), the action film Crank (2006), the political thriller Powerless (2007), Tim Burton's musical film Sweeney Todd , George Clooney's sports comedy A Tempting Game (2008), Guy Ritchie Gangster comedy RocknRolla (2009), Garry Marshall's romantic episode film Valentine's Day (2010) and the comedies Welcome to Cedar Rapids (2011) and Another Thousand Words (2012) with Eddie Murphy in the lead role.

The first series that Jan Odle was in charge of as a dialogue director was the cartoon series Die Dschungelbuch-Kids in 1998 . From 2006 he was responsible for the dubbing and directing of the primetime crime series The Closer for seven years, as well as for the four-part German-Canadian novel Die Säulen der Erde (2010) and its sequel Die Tore der Welt (2012). Since 2011 he has been in charge of the German voice recordings for the fantasy series Game of Thrones and since 2013 for the thriller series The Blacklist .

Radio plays

In 1980 the series The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn was released on record or on cassette with the original speakers, so Odle can also be heard in it as Tom Sawyer. A year later he took part in two more radio plays on the Europa label directed by Heikedine Körting , for example in the 23rd episode of Die Drei ??? the role of Diego Alvaro and in episode 13 of Five Friends the boy Mecky. He also had supporting roles in the children's radio plays Trixie Belden (episode 4, 1988) and Knorx, the little alien (episode 1, 2006). In 2009 he was heard in a supporting role in the third part of the Listening Lounge radio play series Dodo , written by Ivar Leon Menger . Since 2014 he has been speaking Faldarun in the second season of Dragonbound .
