Kelly Jones (born March 31, 1964 in Fort Gordon , Georgia ) is a retired American tennis player . In 1992 he led the tennis world rankings in doubles.

Life

Jones attended Pepperdine University , for which he competed in doubles between 1982 and 1985 and was able to win the NCAA double title twice with Carlos di Laura . At the 1984 Summer Olympics , he took part in the demonstration tournaments for players under the age of 21, but in which no medals were awarded. In 1986 he became a professional tennis player and won the double competition at the Heineken Open the following year with Brad Pearce .

In 1989 he was able to win his first individual tournament on the ATP World Tour against Amos Mansdorf in Singapore . He defended his title the following year against Richard Fromberg . These were his only single titles. In the course of his career he has won a total of eight double titles on the ATP World Tour, including the Volvo International , the Japan Open and the Grand Prix de Tennis de Lyon .

His best individual result in Grand Slam tournaments was reaching the round of 16 of the Australian Open in 1993. At the side of Gretchen Magers , he was in the final of the mixed competition at Wimbledon in 1988 . In 1992 he reached the finals with Rick Leach at both the Australian Open and the US Open , but they were subject to Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde or Jim Grabb and Richey Reneberg . Through these two finals as well as the round of 16 participation in Wimbledon, he reached position one in the double world rankings this year. It had its highest individual rating in 1990 with position 86.

Jones has been married to former tennis player Tami Whitlinger since 1994 . After the end of his professional career, he worked as a coach for Mardy Fish and James Blake, among others .
