history

The oldest written mention of Algermissen is from the year 985.

The two formerly independent villages Groß- and Klein-Algermissen are among the oldest settlements in the Gau Astfala and together belonged to the Lühnde ban as a parish. From the 12th to the 14th century there is a noble family called "von Algermissen". A Dietrich von Algermissen had a magpie in his seal as early as 1350 - today the heraldic animal of the community.

Algermissen experienced rapid development in the late Middle Ages.

Due to its uninterrupted membership of the Hildesheim monastery , Algermissen remained largely unaffected by the Reformation and today still has a clear Catholic majority, which is surprising for Lower Saxony . The places bordering to the north, on the other hand, are predominantly Evangelical-Lutheran. During the Thirty Years War in March 1626, the Danes devastated both villages.

The canton of Groß-Algermissen existed from 1807 to 1810 . The greatest upheavals came in the 19th century with the inauguration of the Hildesheim - Lehrte railway line (1846), the construction of the brickworks, the sugar factory and the dairy, and the founding of numerous companies and associations. The dairy, for example, shipped its products to Hamburg , Berlin and Cologne . In previous years, up to 130,000 geese were fattened on the farms of the village for Christmas. The Reichsbahn built its own goose train station especially for the goose transport trains from Poland and Russia.

Under pastor Franz-Kaspar Köhnen, who officiated in the community for 56 years, today's Catholic was created. Main church St. Matthew with the impressive baroque altar, consecrated on May 5th, 1720. The chairs with the carved cheeks are valuable. The even older Gothic St. Mauritius Chapel from the 14th century with the dates 1670, 1710, 1875, 1915 and 1961 in the weathercock is the oldest building in town (see also under sights).

A big fire in the autumn of 1878 on the Tieberg destroyed four houses and stables, all residents of these houses lost their belongings. Based on this knowledge, a meeting of the warriors' association was held on August 3, 1879 in the Göbbel restaurant. This probably resulted in the establishment of the volunteer fire brigade.

In 1985 Algermissen celebrated its 1000th anniversary. In 2012 Algermissen had around 7,900 inhabitants.

Place name

Former place names of Algermissen were in the years 980–982 Algrimsen, 985 Alegrimesheim, 989 Aleghrimesheim, 989–992 Alegremishusun, 990 Alegrimesheim, 1143 Alegrimessem, 1143 Alegrimeshem, 1161 Algermissen, 1161 Aligrimeshem, 1204 Alegremessen and 1204 Alegremessen. In the first part of the place name is the Germanic first name "Alagrim", too "al-" for "all, whole" and "grim", for example in Old High German "grim, grimmi" for "angry, wild, terrible, excited". Old Norse is “grima” for “mask, larva”, probably related to the fight, which was supposed to appear “grim, terrible”.

Incorporations

On April 1, 1936, the villages of Groß- and Klein-Algermissen were united to form the municipality of Algermissen.

On March 1, 1974, the communities Bledeln, Groß Lobke, Lühnde, Ummeln and Wätzum were incorporated.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Algermissen
Blazon : "In gold over a raised green shield base a magpie stridingto the right ."
Foundation of the coat of arms: In Algermissen there was a documented knight dynasty between 1143 and 1356 who were wealthy in the place and therefore called themselves von Algermissen . This family was also wealthy in Alferde , Lühnde and Lobke and most likely relatives of those from Bolzum and Ummeln , who owned land in the same places. A knight Bertold von Algermissen had three bolts in their seal in 1345, just like those of Bolzum and Ummeln (→ see the following coats of arms: Bolzum and Ummeln ). A Dietrich von Algermissen , on the other hand, had a magpie in his coat of arms as early as 1350 . How this knight finally came to the Elster is unfortunately no longer understandable. The color scheme of the municipal coat of arms is new. The color green symbolizes the sprouting seed, gold indicates ripe ears; therefore the farmers love these colors.

Religions

The Catholic Christians in Algermissen belong to the parish of St. Cäcilia in Harsum . The parish of St. Matthew, which was independent until 2014, was merged on November 1, 2014 with the former parishes of St. Cäcilia in Harsum and St. Catharina in Asel . The main Catholic church in Algermissen is St. Matthew's Church on Marktstrasse. The St. Mauritius Chapel on Langen Strasse is also used for weekday masses. The cath. Parish belongs to the deanery Borsum-Sarstedt in the diocese of Hildesheim .

The Evangelical Lutheran parish of Algermissen, to which the Advent church on Grasweg belonged in Algermissen, became the Evangelical Lutheran Twelve Apostles on January 1, 2012 with the parishes in Groß Lobke, Hotteln, Gödringen, Lühnde, Oesselse and Wirringen-Müllingen-Wassel -Church community Sarstedt-Land amalgamated in the parish of Hildesheim-Sarstedt.
