The village of the same name has 33,220 inhabitants. The place, which looks like a small town, is the seat of the municipal administration, many schools, offices and similar facilities.

The municipalities of Barneveld also include:

  • De Glind (630 inhabitants)
  • Garderen (2.150 inhabitants)
  • Kootwijk (260 inhabitants)
  • Kootwijkerbroek (5.345 inhabitants)
  • Stroe (1,555 inhabitants)
  • Terschuur (1,500 inhabitants)
  • Voorthuizen (10,360 inhabitants) and
  • Zwartebroek (1,220 inhabitants).

In many of these places a relatively large number of people belong to the Orthodox- Calvinist churches of the Netherlands. This is why many petrol stations, pubs, hotels, restaurants, etc. are closed on Sundays.

history

Barneveld has existed as a church village since 1333. However, it is believed that the place is much older. This assumption is based on a document from 1174 which names one of Wolfram van Barneveld . In the restless 15th century, local hero Jan van Schaffelaar is said to have escaped torture and thus the possible betrayal of his allies by throwing himself to his death from the church tower in Barneveld. There is a country estate near Barneveld which is actually called Schaffelaar .

To increasingly censored connections of the English, the message to become independent, was in 1918-1923 Kootwijk - with 2.4 MW particularly strong - long-wave transmitters to communicate with the colony Dutch East Indies in Java , using the Malabar radio station in 11,500 km Distance (southeast) erected. The transmitter building has a - technically necessary - 900 m 2 large hall, was built in the new building material concrete and - inspired by the figure of a sphinx in the Art Deco style and is empty today and is now a Rijksmonument . Short-wave transmitters that require less energy and allow voice transmission soon followed, and in 2000 the last transmitter functions were shut down.

During the German occupation in World War II between December 1942 and September 29, 1943, several hundred Jews were housed on the Schaffelaar property as so-called “protection Jews”. Reichskommissar Seyß-Inquart had allowed the Dutch State Secretary Karel Johannes Frederiks and Jan van Dam , the Secretary General in the Ministry of Education, Science and Cultural Administration, to nominate around five hundred Jews for it. At the end of September 1943, however, these were taken to Westerbork and deported on to Theresienstadt on September 4, 1944 . A memorial plaque has stood on an access road to the castle since September 29, 1987, commemorating the murdered Jews.

Economy and Transport

Barneveld is of central economic importance for the Geldersche Vallei . The industry is diverse. On the A1 motorway ( Apeldoorn - Amersfoort ), between Barneveld and Voorthuizen, lies the extensive, important industrial area of Harselaar . There is, among other things, an auction house for used cars .

Barneveld has three stations on the Amersfoort - Ede - Wageningen railway line , which is nicknamed Kippenlijntje ("chicken line"). It is connected to Amersfoort , Apeldoorn and Ede by motorways .

The “ Barnevelder ” chicken breed comes from this region, which is famous for its chicken breeding.

Because of the wooded area, many tourists come to the eastern half of the municipality again and again. There are several small hotels, as well as campsites and facilities with holiday apartments.
