Sibiu is a Romanian district ( Județ ) with the district town Hermannstadt (Romanian Sibiu ) in the planning region Centru (center) . Historically, it belongs to the Transylvania region . The license plate number and the common abbreviation for the circle is SB.

The Sibiu county is bordered to the north of the county Mures , in the east to the Braşov County , in the south of the circles Arges and Valcea and in the west to the Alba County .

From 2008 to 2012, Martin Bottesch of the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania was the district council chairman.

Demographics

In 2002 the district had 421,724 inhabitants and a population density of 78 inhabitants per km². In 2011 it had 397,322 inhabitants, a population density of 73 inhabitants per km². In addition to Romanians , who make up the main population, there are still German-speaking and Hungarian -speaking parts of the population.

The district has a total area of ​​5432 km², which corresponds to 2.27% of the area of ​​Romania.

The southern part of the district is high alpine and includes the central part of the Southern Carpathians with peaks up to over 2500  m altitude ( Negoiu , Vânătarea lui Buteanu ). The northern and central part is hilly ( Harbach-Hochland , Zekesch-Hochland , Kokel-Hochland ) and is traversed by larger rivers such as the Alt in the south and the Great Kokel in the north in an east-west direction.

In Salzburg near Sibiu , salt deposits emerge in the transition layers from the mountains to the highlands, which were extracted thousands of years ago. Several salt lakes, such as the Oyster Lake , were created in the area by flooding salt pits .
