La Roque-d'Anthéron is a French municipality with 5455 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .
geography
The municipality is located 25 kilometers northwest of Aix-en-Provence . Neighboring municipalities are Charleval , Rognes , Lambesc and Saint-Estève-Janson .
history
Around 200 BC there was apparently a Celtic oppidum in what is now the municipality . The first Cistercian monks came in 1144, and in 1175 the foundation stone for the monastery church of Silvacane was laid. In 1514, seventy families settled here, including many Waldensians . On April 17th, 1545 troops came and murdered the local Waldensians. In addition, the hamlet of Silvacane was burned down. In 1554 a canal was opened leading through La Roque-d'Anthéron, which supplied Salon-de-Provence with water from the Durance . The canal also made it possible to build a watermill. In 1560 the first Protestant church in the region was built in La Roque-d'Anthéron in a previously unknown location. In 1598 the town's Renaissance castle was built. Today it is a nursing home. Auguste de Forbin was born in the castle in 1777 . In 1847 the Canal de Marseille was dug, which also runs through the municipality.
