List of historical short track world records

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Italian Fabio Carta was the world record holder over 1000 meters in 1999

The list of historical short track world records includes all of the International Skating Union (ISU) officially recognized world records in the adult sector.

The list goes from 1981, when the first short track world records were set, to today (as of early 2015). During this time, 74 men and 70 women (including the relay world record holder) set a total of 170 world records. Of these, 83 are in the men's and 87 in the women's area. The Chinese Wang Meng set the most records with nine best times , followed by the South Korean Chun Lee-kyung , who was seven times faster than the existing record. Sylvie Daigle from Canada together with Wang Meng set the most individual world records, six in total. Daigle was also the only athlete to hold the best mark on all four individual distances. The longest-running world record was set by the South Korean Chun Lee-kyung, who held the 3000-meter world record for women for 13 years between March 1995 and March 2008. 124 of the 170 world records were set by athletes from three countries - Canada (48 records), South Korea (46 records) and China (30 records). The track on which the most world records have been run is the Olympic Oval in Calgary , which has been the scene of a world record 30 times so far.

Hints:

  • The exact regulations and a list of the current world best performances can be found in the main article Short track world records .
  • The status of all lists is February 8, 2015.
  • The list can be sorted: by clicking on a column header, the list is sorted according to this column, clicking twice reverses the sorting. Any desired combination can be achieved by clicking two columns in a row.

Athletes

Zhou Yang set two individual world records and two relay world records between 2008 and 2010

So far 83 world records have been set in the men's short track, and 87 in women . Wang Meng from China set the highest number of records, nine in total . The Canadian Sylvie Daigle was the only runner who managed to set a new world record at least once on all individual routes. She achieved a total of six individual records and thus tops the list of most individual world records together with Wang Meng. In addition to Daigle, two other short trackers undercut the existing world record six times, the Chinese Yang Yang (A) and Daigle's compatriot Marc Gagnon . This makes Gagnon the best of the Canadian men who make the most athletes on the list. In the men's area, not a single athlete like Daigle has managed to hold a world record on all individual distances. The Canadians Louis Grenier and Steve Robillard came closest, each running a record on three courses. Robillard was also successful with the relay.

So far, no athlete has managed to set five world records on one track. Only Wang Meng achieved four consecutive bests on a track, who between 2008 and 2013 undercut the existing best performance on the 500-meter distance four times, three times her own. The length of time between the first and last world record of an athlete is ten years. In 1981, the Japanese Tatsuyoshi Ishihara set a 1500 meter world record, ran two 3000 meter world records and improved the 1500 meter record again in 1991.

The following two tables list the athletes who have set the most world records. The length of the validity of the records does not matter.

countries

The country ranking of the established world records is led by three nations by a large margin: Canada, South Korea and China. In the last decade in particular, these three countries dominated; since 2001 almost all world record runners have come from them. First place in the list is Canada with 48 world records - this corresponds to 28.3 percent of all records - which is particularly strong in the men's short track, but has been waiting for a new world record for women since 1997. Only two fewer world records were set by the South Korean athletes, whose balance between the sexes is largely balanced. China has a little more distance to these two nations. Although it is most successful with women with 26 world records, it only has four best marks for men.

Of the remaining nations, Italy and Japan are the best, the athletes from both countries have so far set 13 records each. The other nations drop even more clearly. In seventh place is Bulgaria, which achieved all four world records with Evgenia Radanova . One place ahead is the Netherlands, where the six best marks were set by eight different athletes - including the relay record holder.

places

The Olympic Oval in Calgary , Canada has set a world record 26 times

Most of the world records were set in Calgary on the Olympic Oval , a total of 30. Beijing was the second most frequent venue for a new world record, with an athlete in the Chinese capital beating the existing time 19 times. A total of 49 of the 170 world records were run on one of these two tracks, which corresponds to around 28.8 percent. While two-thirds men's world records were set in Calgary, the balance between the sexes in Beijing is balanced. The difference in Calgary is made especially by the Canadian men, who between 2000 and 2010 set ten world records on their home track.

Of the 34 tracks on which one or more world records were set, 18 are in Europe (61 world records in total), eleven in Asia (46 world records), nine in North America (62 world records) and one in Australia (one world record). 17 countries hosted races that set records, including Germany (with Dresden and Oberstdorf) and Austria (with Vienna).

In the early days of the short track in particular - i.e. in the 1980s and early 1990s - most world records were set at major events, as there was no World Cup at that time . For example, a total of seven world bests were run in Amsterdam, six of them at the 1985 World Cup . In other places such as Gjøvik or Moncton, all the world records run on the tracks come from a single world championship. Twelve world records were set at the Winter Olympics, four of them at the Calgary demonstration competitions in 1988.

The following table lists all the places in which at least three world record times have been run. In addition, the year numbers of the first and so far last world records are given. The individually listed world best marks for men and women are added up in the WR column with a gray background . Finally, the last column shows the major events that have taken place in the location and - in brackets - the number of world records set there.
