Batik-Del Monte

Batik-Del Monte was an Italian cycling team from 1993 to 1997 . The team was initially called Mecair-Ballan and was u. a. sponsored by Mecair , an Italian manufacturer of valves . In the meantime the team was called Gewiss .

history

The team was founded in 1993, which until then had only been active in the amateur field. Emanuele Bombini acted as sporting director . Moreno Argentin , who had proven himself to be an excellent classic driver in recent years, was brought in as captain .

Already in the first year the team was able to achieve remarkable successes, including three stage wins and 2nd place in the overall ranking of the Giro d'Italia by Piotr Ugrumov , who was only narrowly beaten by Miguel Indurain .

In 1994 the team was renamed Gewiss-Ballan and reinforced by some drivers from the disbanded Ariostea team. Among others, Giorgio Furlan , Bruno Cenghialta and the Dane Bjarne Riis were hired as reinforcements. There was hardly a race in the first half of the season that was not influenced by Gewiss-Ballan. In addition to Tirreno-Adriatico , Milan-San Remo , Criterium International La Flèche Wallonne , Liège – Bastogne – Liège , overall ranking and 4 stages of the Giro d'Italia , four stage victories in the 1994 Tour de France, the Tour of Lombardy was also won.

Doping suspicions

It was the numerous successes, but also the way in which the team celebrated the victories. At Flèche Wallonne in 1994, among others, the three drivers Moreno Argentin , Giorgio Furlan and Evgueni Berzin dismantled the entire field of drivers on the wall of Huy. The winner was Moreno Argentin ahead of Giorgio Furlan and Evgueni Berzin . In addition, the team doctor at the time, Michele Ferrari, gave an interview in L'Équipe magazine on the subject of EPO .
