description
The nature reserve “Mehlbaum” is described as “ Juniper heather with a special wealth of partly threatened and protected animal and plant species, including orchids , gentians , cat paws , swamp heart leaf ( Parnassia palustris ) and asparagus peas ( Lotus maritimus )”.
history
The area had not been used for a long time before the Protection Ordinance was issued. Therefore, growing shrubs and conifers threatened to displace the very rare plant species that still occur here.
After the designation as a protected area, the Albstadt Forestry Office began to look after the juniper heather in the early 1990s, in which the Alb-Neckar Nature Conservation Association also participated. Spruce and pine trees were sawn out and willow beech trees were exposed. The edge of the forest has also been carefully thinned out. This stopped the succession in the most sensitive areas of the semi-arid and dry grassland. The clearing not only appealed to the light and warmth-loving plant and animal species, but also to a number of shepherds who were under contract with the city of Albstadt elsewhere. As long as the juniper heather was overgrown with old grass and bushes, they were not interested in the flour tree area. But now they went far too often with their flocks to the cleared slope. The Protection Ordinance now proved to be useful in two respects: On the one hand, it was able to stimulate and finance the clearing, on the other hand it was possible to reduce agricultural overexploitation by modern migratory sheep farming to an intensity oriented towards the protection purpose.
Protection purpose
The main protection purpose is the preservation of the juniper heather, which is characterized by a special wealth of partly threatened and protected animal and plant species.
Hiking trails
The two long-distance hiking trails “ Donauberglandweg ” and “ Hohenzollernweg ” as well as the “Ochsenbergrunde”, one of eight signposted “ Albstadt Eaves ”, lead through the protected area .
