The Metronom Eisenbahngesellschaft mbH ( proper spelling metronom ) is a non-federally owned railway company based in Uelzen and is one of the largest private railways in Germany with over 100,000 passengers a day.

The company is active in passenger transport and operates double-decker coaches from Bombardier under the metronom brand on the routes Hamburg – Bremen , Hamburg – Lüneburg – Uelzen , Uelzen – Celle – Hanover and Hanover – Northeim – Göttingen as well as Alstom electric multiple units enno on the Hanover – Gifhorn – Wolfsburg and Hildesheim – Braunschweig - Wolfsburg routes .

The transports are carried out on the basis of long-term transport contracts with the transport authorities of the federal states. Metronom's transport networks are commissioned by the Lower Saxony regional transport company (LNVG), the Hanover region , the city-states of Hamburg and Bremen and the regional association for the greater Braunschweig area .

background

At the end of the 1990s, the three federal states involved, Lower Saxony , Hamburg and Bremen, agreed to no longer order the Regional Express services on the Hamburg – Bremen and Hamburg – Uelzen routes via direct allocation from DB Regio , but instead from a new rail transport company (EVU) and to award the transports in the course of a tender in competition. The change of operator should be used at the same time to improve the offer in the form of longer trains and better service.

In February 2002 the company was initially founded under the name MetroRail . In autumn 2003, after a legal dispute with Metro AG, the company was renamed to its current name Metronom and the company logo was modified.

The shareholder structure has remained almost unchanged to this day and consists of three companies that represent the individual federal states. Specifically, these are NiedersachsenBahn GmbH (73.58%), BeNEX GmbH (a former subsidiary of Hamburger Hochbahn AG (HHA) 26.42%). The Bremer Straßenbahn (BSAG) (5.0%) (now Bremer Transport Company (BVG GmbH) ) has sold its stake in 2018 to the NiedersachsenBahn and BENEX. The NiedersachsenBahn GmbH acts as the operating company and is an association of OHE (60%), based in Celle and the EVB (40%) in Zeven .

In April 2007, the majority of OHE from the state of Lower Saxony, the Federal Republic of Germany and DB Regio was sold to Arriva-Bachstein GmbH (since March 23, 2011 Netinera Bachstein GmbH ), to Netinera (then Arriva Germany ) after a bidding process 86% is involved. Netinera thus indirectly controls 30.7% of the Metronome's capital, making it its largest shareholder.

On December 14, 2003, the metronom railway company started operating on its first routes Hamburg – Bremen and Hamburg – Uelzen. In the following years, the route network grew steadily through further tender successes and today covers large parts of Lower Saxony. The current transport contracts mostly run until December 2018 (metronom lines) and December 2025 (enno network). On December 20, 2017, LNVG announced that Metronom had been awarded the contract for “Hansenetz and Uelzen – Göttingen”. With this new transport contract, Metronom will operate its electric double-decker routes Hamburg – Bremen, Hamburg – Uelzen and Uelzen – Hannover – Göttingen for 15 years, from December 2018 to December 2033.

Metronom does not have its own vehicles, as these belong to the vehicle pools of the state of Lower Saxony ( metronom double-decker trains) or the regional association for the greater Braunschweig area ( enno multiple units). As a railway company, Metronom has operator responsibility, i.e. it is responsible for the reliability and safety of the entire railway operation. All locomotives and wagons are serviced in the Uelzen depot by OHE staff on behalf of the manufacturer Bombardier . This depot was built specifically for the maintenance of the metronome trains and is located in the north of Uelzen, on the so-called "Dannenberger Bahnbogen".

The maintenance of the trains for the Niederelbebahn took place in Bremervörde at EVB , for this purpose the trains were transferred over the Stade – Bremervörde line, two units were coupled together at the start / end of operations.

The Metronom has also commissioned the OHE to monitor and dispose of its trains. From Celle , employees of the OHE control the entire business process and initiate appropriate measures in the event of irregularities (e.g. delays, route closures, staff failures, vehicle disruptions). The maintenance of the electric multiple units of the enno network takes place in the depot of Alstom Transport Germany in Braunschweig .

Since 2010, Metronom has been the largest non-federal railway with 9.3 million train kilometers and over 100,000 passengers per day. Metronom is a member of the TBNE and the VDV .

In 2015, Metronom established enno as a new, independent brand for the operation of the two newly won routes in the metropolitan region of Hanover-Braunschweig-Göttingen-Wolfsburg .

Hamburg - Bremen (metronome Weser-Takt) and Hamburg - Uelzen (metronome Elbe-Takt)

Since December 2003 the local traffic routes Hamburg – Bremen and Hamburg – Uelzen have been operated as fast regional transport. The basis was initially a seven-year transport contract, which was concluded after a " private award ". Only the fast RE services were part of the contract , while the regional trains (RB) that stopped at each station were initially still operated by DB Regio . Since then, Metronom has generally been using units with six or eight double-decker cars on these routes , with the control car running at the northern end of the train. With the timetable change in December 2010, the regional trains were also taken over under the name MetronomRegional (MEr). The LNVG refers to these relations internally as the Hanse network .

The number of passengers rose in the first two years of operation (2004 and 2005) by more than 50 percent. In 2005, 590 million passenger kilometers were covered. In 2003 (the last year of operation of DB Regio on the lines) the traffic performance was 393 million passenger kilometers.

Hanover - Göttingen (Metronome Leinetal-Takt) and Hanover - Uelzen (Metronom Aller-Takt)

On December 11, 2005, the metronome began operating on the Uelzen - Hanover - Göttingen route (KBS 110/350) every hour. The eight-year transport contract between the Metronom Railway Company and the State of Lower Saxony and the Hanover Region was based on a Europe-wide tender won and an option to extend it until December 2015. The metronom trains on this route usually have six cars. Since the timetable change in December 2009, the metronome no longer stops at the train stations Hannover Bismarckstraße , Hannover Messe / Laatzen (except during trade fairs), Rethen (Leine) and Barnten , where it had stopped every two hours until then. Since then, these stations have been served by the S 4 line of the Hanover S-Bahn .

After 100 days of operation, around 12,000 passengers per day were carried on the line. This corresponds to an increase of ten percent. The punctuality rate rose from 92 to 95 percent.

Until December 2010 and since December 2012, individual metronome trains have been running the Hamburg - Uelzen - Hanover - Göttingen route continuously.

Hamburg - Cuxhaven

In October 2006, Metronom won the operation of regional traffic from December 2007 between Hamburg and Cuxhaven (" Niederelbebahn ") with an annual traffic performance of 1.4 million train kilometers. The company was the only bidder in the tender that provided for the use of the state's own vehicle pool.

The route is 115 kilometers long and not electrified between Stade and Cuxhaven . Known were used metronome -Doppelstockwagen along with newly developed diesel locomotives of the series 246 . At the end of 2018, the Metronom Eisenbahngesellschaft transferred operations on the Hamburg – Cuxhaven route to DB Regio AG , which had won the renewed tender and is operating it with a new company under the START brand .

Hamburg - Lüneburg and Hamburg - Bremen

From the end of 2007 to the end of 2010, the regional train lines Hamburg– Lüneburg and Hamburg– Tostedt (individual journeys also beyond that) were operated under the product name “MetronomRegional” (MEr). Both services were awarded as part of a tender for which only the metronom Eisenbahngesellschaft was the only company to submit an offer.

As of December 2010, the previous MetronomRegional connection Hamburg – Tostedt to Bremen main station was tied through as part of a new tender . This project was initially called the metropolitan railway and was then called the Hanse-Netz . As part of this, the metronom Eisenbahngesellschaft was also awarded the contract for regional traffic between Bremen Hbf and Rotenburg (Wümme) and took over this section of the route from DB Regio in December 2010 .

In December 2012, the MetronomRegional was designated in the timetables with “Metronome - train stops everywhere”, a year later all previous features were replaced by a ticker on the display boards (“stops everywhere” or “does not stop everywhere”).

With the introduction of route numbers from December 14, 2014, they will operate as RB31 and RB41. This enables the passenger to better recognize whether it is a regional express (RE) or a regional train (RB). The marketing slogan Your new No. 1 - less crowded, more space was a supportive addition.

Cooperation tickets to Heligoland and the Watt

Since 2008 there has been a combined ticket called metronom Atlantis in cooperation with the shipping company FRS Helgoline from May 1st to September 30th , which offers a direct connection from Hamburg via the Niederelbebahn to Cuxhaven with bus transfer and ferry to Helgoland . Another offer metronome regio Marist is valid until October 31, allowing bus tours in Cuxhaven area ( " Cuxland ") as well as guided walks across the mudflats u. a. to the Hamburg island of Neuwerk .

E-Netz Lower Saxony East

On August 6, 2014 it was announced that the metronome had won the tender for the Lower Saxony East electrical network ("ENNO"), which covers the Wolfsburg - Gifhorn - Hanover and Wolfsburg - Braunschweig - Hildesheim routes . The contract initially includes 2.1 million train kilometers per year, began in December 2015 and has a term of 10 years. Initially, 20 Coradia Continental electric multiple units  from the manufacturer Alstom were used , which the ZGB (meanwhile renamed as Regional Association Greater Braunschweig ) makes available in its own vehicle pool . The vehicles are worth over 100 million euros. These services are operated under the brand name " enno ", which is derived from the route network designation mentioned in the tender.

In 2017, the fleet was expanded to include a further four vehicles to 24 enno multiple units by reordering Alstom. These enable the regional association and metronom to expand services and increase seating capacity in the enno network.

With the timetable change in December 2017, the services of the enno were expanded to include 15 additional trips, particularly during rush hour and in the evening hours. In particular, the connection between the cities of Braunschweig and Wolfsburg has been strengthened.

Improvements

The takeover of operations by Metronom on the Hamburg - Bremen and Hamburg - Lüneburg - Uelzen routes was also used to implement a long-planned service improvement. The DB regional trains were often overcrowded due to their inadequate transport capacity (four, in individual cases six double-decker cars were always used) and were often delayed due to the associated longer passenger switching times. In addition, there were occasional vehicle malfunctions, although the possibility of catching up on delays was limited due to the maximum speed of the vehicle material used of 140 km / h.

To remedy these shortcomings, Metronom was equipped with a brand new fleet of vehicles from Bombardier and the train length was increased to six to eight double-decker cars. The cars have improved equipment (reading lamps, snack and drink machines), and the locomotives are more powerful and can reach a top speed of 160 km / h. Together with further service improvements, this led to an increase in passenger numbers of over 30 percent after the first year of operation, with a punctuality rate of 95 percent on average. A traffic survey after the second year showed a 50 percent increase in passengers compared to the DB Regio regional express connection. In the meantime, especially in commuter traffic to Hamburg, there are several overcrowded trains. The Metronom Eisenbahngesellschaft has therefore been trying since December 2012 with a "Sardine Train Campaign" to direct regular commuters to metronome trains that are not in great demand.

After the first year of operation on the Hanover - Uelzen and Hanover - Göttingen routes, the number of passengers increased by 20 percent. In contrast to the Hamburg - Bremen and Hamburg - Uelzen routes, the metronome trains replaced even older single-story n-car sets here. The increase in comfort also included air suspension and air conditioning . N-car sets were also replaced on the Niederelbebahn .

"Train of Ideas"

In September 2011, the metronome trains exceeded the limit of 50 million train kilometers. Since October 6, 2011, an electric locomotive ( 146-18 ) and a diesel locomotive ( 246-004 ) have had the following special inscription : "50,000,000 km safely by train through Lower Saxony" . This lettering is updated regularly when a new round total is reached.

Traffic from 2018

In December 2017, Metronom was awarded the contract in the LNVG tender "Hansenetz und Uelzen / Göttingen 2018+" for lines RE2, RE3, RE4. RB31 and RB41 for the period from December 9, 2018 to December 2033.

The offer is to be increased in the outskirts and at the weekend, in principle trains with at least six cars are to run and a direct connection between Hanover and Hamburg is to be offered every two hours. Starting in 2019, LNVG will modernize the existing cars, they will get new floors, new seats, new lighting, surveillance cameras and WiFi access. The exterior paint should also be renewed.

The RE5 Hamburg – Cuxhaven line has been served by the transport company Start Unterelbe mbH since December 9, 2018 . This is a newly founded subsidiary of Regionalverkehr Start Deutschland GmbH , which in turn is a subsidiary of DB Regio .

Furnishing

Even before the general smoking ban on all German passenger trains, the metronome was a purely non-smoking train, and on the Hanover - Göttingen and Hanover - Uelzen routes it offers the option of free reservations for commuters ("regular seat"), wheelchair users and bicycle groups, as well as a bistro area until December 2019 Vending machines for drinks and snacks in every metronome train. The cars are fully air-conditioned and have air suspension .

The provision and consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited on all metronome trains.

Passengers with restricted mobility have a multi-purpose compartment with a barrier-free toilet in each control car , which can be reached via ramps that allow wheelchair entry and exit . However, wheelchair users cannot get on and off everywhere without any problems, as not all platforms are barrier-free .

The maximum speed of the metronome trains is 160 km / h. This means that the possible speed is higher than that of the previously common regional trains, which can usually travel a maximum of 140 km / h, and saves around eight to eleven minutes on the Hanover - Uelzen route and seven on the Hanover - Göttingen route (thanks also to revised timetables) Minutes travel time compared to the previous offers. For the first time, all ICE connections in Göttingen will be reached on schedule . On the existing Hanover - Göttingen section, the metronome travels at the same speed (max. 160 km / h) as the Intercity operated by Deutsche Bahn AG . The metronome connections are classified as Regional Express routes; this corresponds to product class C of the DB. Their local transport tariffs are also used in the metronome as part of a cooperation between the two companies.

Metronom responded to the great demand for more bicycle parking spaces on the trains. In the lower deck of some intermediate cars, all seats have been completely removed, creating additional parking spaces. Since spring 2006, Metronom has been using trolleys with bicycle compartments of different sizes on all routes in summer. In contrast to the other intermediate cars, these double-deck cars have low entrances that allow easy loading and unloading. Every autumn, the seats removed for the bicycle parking spaces are reinstalled.

In May 2006, 18 new bicycle trolleys (type DBdpza ) were put into operation, offering up to 30 bicycle spaces on the lower deck.

Locomotives and rolling stock

Metronom's fleet of locomotives consists of 29 electric locomotives Bombardier "TRAXX P160 AC" ( ME 146-01 to -10 ), Bombardier "TRAXX P160 AC2" ( ME 146-11 to -18 and 146 531-539 ), 8  diesel locomotives Bombardier "TRAXX P160 DE ”  - class 246, which was specially developed for the Hamburg – Cuxhaven route in just 700 days - as well as over 220  fourth-generation double-decker cars (“ Görlitz ”type), which were also manufactured by Bombardier .

All rolling stock comes from the state pool of the Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft Niedersachsen mbH (LNVG) . It is rented for the duration of the respective transport service and painted in the colors blue, white and yellow provided by the LNVG. This color scheme (which was also adhered to with the metronome ticket machines ) can be found both outside and inside and thus clearly distinguishes the trains from those of the Deutsche Bahn (DB).

Diesel locomotives

Locomotive 246 011-1

The locomotive 92 80 1246 011-1 D-IGT (246 011-1) wore the colors of the LNVG until the end of 2013 , but is not on schedule for metronome. It was only used by Metronom in the event of a long-term failure of regular locomotives. The model 246 001 was sold to the Havelländische Eisenbahn (HVLE) in October , as was the machine 246 010.

The locomotives 146-520 and 146-521 do not belong to the LNVG vehicle pool. They are rented externally and are colored blue.

Train composition of the metronome trains

In principle, the control cars of the locomotive-hauled metronome trains are lined up at the north end. The first class of car is at the end of each train, i.e. H. On the one hand, in the upper deck of the control car, in which snacks and drinks from vending machines were offered, and on the other - on certain routes - in the upper deck of the first car behind the locomotive. Regardless of this, the first car behind the locomotive is always a quiet zone on all routes. In the control car there is an area for wheelchair users with a ramp and toilet, bicycles can be taken in the second car behind the control car. The rest of the train consists of second class cars.

Public presence and customer magazine

Metronom's communication takes place in the respective regions of the transport networks via the company's two brands: metronom and enno . In February 2017, Metronom and the creative advertising agencies received the German Media Prize for the best advertising in public spaces.

The company's own customer magazine is called momente . It is printed quarterly and is also available on the Internet. It primarily provides information about the metronome itself as well as changes in the timetable, in the car equipment or the like. In addition, interesting facts about the metronome, travel and event tips, current topics and general information about the season or the railway are offered. Since the start of operation of the enno network, the moments also contains a specially designed magazine section for enno .

Metronome in the model

Several model railway manufacturers are currently offering models in metronome colors. The nominal sizes N, TT and H0 from Piko , Tillig , Trix and Märklin are represented . The models are based on the locomotive and car model forms available there from the range of these manufacturers and do not always correspond exactly to the prototype. Not all car types are available in order to put together a prototypical metronome train.
