NHL Amateur Draft 1963–1968

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The NHL Amateur Draft was first on 5 June 1963 at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Canadian Montreal in the Province of Quebec performed. The then six teams of the National Hockey League had the choice among all amateur players who were 17 years of age and older and had no contract with another professional team outside the NHL. This annual talent draw, in which more than 200 players have been drawn since the 1980s, did not have the status it has today. In the first six years, no more than 24 players were selected. The draft always took place between the end of April and mid-May. The venue was five times the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal, only in 1965 the event was relocated to the Mount Royal Hotel , also located in Montreal .

The yield of the teams was limited in these years. Brad Park is the only player to have played more than 1,000 competitive games in the NHL. The second notable player is Ken Dryden , who was selected by the Boston Bruins back in 1964 . His NHL career began six years later with the Montréal Canadiens .

While in later years the first draft pick signed players who led their teams and often led to the Stanley Cup winning , three of the six top picks from 1963 to 1968 did not even make it to the NHL.

For the first four years only players from Canada were selected. It was not until 1967, chose Detroit Red Wings with Al Karlander a US player.
