The season 1996/97 was the 59th regular season of the National League A . In the playoff final , SC Bern became Swiss champions against EV Zug . As part of the increase in the NLA, the NLB master, SC Herisau , was accepted into the NLA for the following season.
mode
The ten teams initially played two double rounds of 18 games each. The best six teams determined the pairings for the playoffs during the championship round. The other four teams determined the two other participants in the playoffs on nine game days, taking the points from the preliminary round. Quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final were each played according to the Best of Five mode .
