Attractions

In the district of Pentedattilo there are ruins of a castle from the Middle Ages. This castle was rebuilt in the 16th century. There are other buildings from the Middle Ages to see, such as a church from 1564 and the ruins of a Dominican monastery. The place was abandoned due to the risk of earthquakes.

Pentedattilo

Pentedattilo ( Italian still Pentidattilo, Calabrian Greek : Pentadàktilo) is an old and once deserted district of Melito di Porto Salvo. Until 1811 the settlement was an independent municipality.

Pentedattilo is 250 meters above sea level. The settlement was founded around 640 BC. Built on the Calvary (Italian: Monte Calvario) at the foot of the characteristic rock, which resembles a giant hand with five fingers, and from which it owes its name ( ancient Greek pénte dáktyloi , five fingers). From there, the Ionian Sea , Sicily and the nearby Etna volcano can be seen. In the beginning Pentedattilo was a colony of Chalcis , during the Greek colonization of southern Italy ( Magna Graecia ) and during the time of the Roman Republic an important political, economic, military and religious center.

Media attention

In February 2017, it became known that a girl from the village had been raped for years by the local mafia gang. Apparently, many local residents knew about the acts of violence, which occurred several times a week, but looked away for fear of the mafia. International media reported on the case.
