Primera División (Mexico) 1963/64
The 1963/64 season was the 21st season of the Mexican Primera División and the last after nine years in which the championship was held with 14 teams. With the expansion of the league from 14 to 16 clubs in the future, Club Deportivo Nacional, as the worst in the table since the Mexican professional league was founded, had the rare luck of being able to avoid relegation through a separate tournament at the end of the season (details at the end of this article).
The title race
After Club Deportivo Oro was able to snatch the title away from their city rivals Chivas on the last day of the previous season, they had the opportunity to take revenge on the first day of this season. But last season's runner-up was defeated by his city rivals in the shared Estadio Jalisco 4-0, which meant the season opener clearly failed. In the first three away games with the Pumas (0: 0), the Cañeros (0: 2) and the Freseros (0: 0), the Chivasi remained without scoring their own as well as in the second leg against champions Oro (0: 0 ). Nevertheless, Chivas managed an exciting duel for the championship lead against the capital city club América . After the 23rd matchday, the two arch-rivals of Mexican football were at the top of the table with 31 points each when the two opponents met directly on the third from last matchday at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario in Mexico City . With goals from Francisco Jara (44th) and Salvador Reyes (79th), Chivas won 2-0 and did not lead the table in the following two games against city rivals Nacional (2-0) and Atlas (3-0) more out of hand. Thus, the Club Deportivo Guadalajara secured its sixth championship title, while the Club América again came away empty-handed.

The expansion tournament
Due to the expansion of the league to 16 teams, there were two starting places to be awarded in the 1964/65 season in addition to the rise of the second division champions Cruz Azul . For this, the bottom of the league table, CD Nacional, and the teams of CD Veracruz , CF Madero and Poza Rica FC played . The games were played in January and February 1964 at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario in Mexico City.

1 Because neither the goal difference nor the direct comparison was used in the event of a tie, a play-off was necessary, which CD Veracruz won against CF Madero 5-4 on penalties after regular time had ended goalless.
