Primera División (Mexico) 1979/80
The 1979/80 season was the 37th regular championship round in Mexico since the introduction of the Primera División in the 1943/44 season.
The relegated from the previous season , CD Veracruz , was replaced by the promoted Atlas Guadalajara.
As already practiced in the previous season, the competition was divided into 4 groups of 5 teams each. Regardless of this, each team in the league continued to play against each other twice (in one home and one away game). At the end of the league round, the top two teams in each group qualified for the final round, which was played in two groups of four teams each. The two group winners played the finals at the end of the season.
The two teams that had the fewest points during the entire season faced each other in a final. In these finals it was about staying in the House of Lords and, like last year, the Unión de Curtidores team prevailed. Relegated to the second division was the CSD Jalisco, who never returned to the top division.

1 The game played on December 9, 1979 between Tampico and America was stopped in the 88th minute when the score was 1: 3 due to crowd riots, the result was retained. As a punishment, Tampico had to play his next home game on December 23, 1979 against Deportivo Neza (4-1) at the Estadio Olímpico Victoria .

Relegation round
The two teams with the worst points played two relegation games at the end of the season to keep them up. Unión de Curtidores from León beat the CSD Jalisco from Guadalajara very tightly . All 7 goals in these two games came without exception in the second half. After Jalisco had already been 2-0 up in the first leg, Geraldo Goncalvez practically scored the next goal for the guests with the final whistle. In the second leg Rubén Ayala brought CSD Jalisco in the 61st minute with a 0-1 lead, which was a big step towards relegation for the team from Guadalajara. But again Geraldo Goncalvez proved to be the savior of his team and scored with his goals in the 64th and 73rd minute the lead in the second leg and the equalizer to 3: 3 in the overall standings. After all, it was up to José Ángel Martínez to save Unión de Curtidores from relegation with his goal to make it 3-1 in the 80th minute and to send CSD Jalisco to the second division.
