Flossenbürg (Bavarian: Flossabirch) is a municipality in the Upper Palatinate district of Neustadt an der Waldnaab . The state-approved resort is located in the Upper Palatinate Forest on the border with the Czech Republic , where the neighboring municipality of Lesná (Schönwald) is located. The Flossenbürg concentration camp of the National Socialists was located in Flossenbürg from 1938 to 1945 .

The place was first mentioned in a document in 948. The Burg Flossenburg was a fortress of Hohenstaufen . Flossenbürg in today's Upper Palatinate district later belonged to the Duchy of Neuburg-Sulzbach and in 1777 came to the Floß district court of the Electorate of Bavaria . In 1818 today's political community was established.

Flossenbürg concentration camp

The Flossenbürg concentration camp in April 1945

From 1938 to 1945 the Flossenbürg concentration camp existed in the community with more than 100,000 prisoners. Well-known figures of the resistance against National Socialism such as Wilhelm Canaris and Hans Oster were executed there, and the Protestant theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer was hanged 14 days before the camp was liberated. On April 23, 1945, the 90th Infantry Division of the 3rd US Army reached the community and the concentration camp and took them without a fight. In the previous weeks, prisoners had been murdered and most of the prisoners had been taken out of the camp on death marches . In a large area from Würzburg to Prague, the Flossenbürg camp system included 80 subcamps, including the notorious Doggerstollen . Today a memorial is located on part of the concentration camp site. The Evangelical Youth of Upper Franconia organizes an international youth meeting every year, at which young people from Europe come together to commemorate the dead together with prisoners of the former Flossenbürg concentration camp and to remember the terrible events, but also to seek dialogue with contemporary witnesses.

In Flossenbürg there is a cemetery of honor on Hohenstaufenstrasse where 146 concentration camp prisoners are buried. In southern Germany, where death marches to or from the Flossenbürg concentration camp took place, there are graves with at least 1,300 prisoners' graves.
