Saint-Pair-sur-Mer is a French municipality with 4066 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Manche in the region of Normandy . Saint-Pair-sur-Mer belongs to the Arrondissement of Avranches and the Canton of Granville . The inhabitants are called Saint-Parais .
geography
Saint-Pair-sur-Mer is a seaside resort on the Gulf of Saint-Malo in the English Channel . The Thar flows through the community to its mouth in the Gulf. Saint-Pair-sur-Mer is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Granville in the north, Saint-Plarches in the northeast, Saint-Aubin-des-Préaux in the east, Saint-Pierre-Langers in the southeast and Jullouville in the south and southwest.
The former route nationale 811 (today's D937) runs through the municipality .
history
As early as the 6th century there was a settlement that was initially named Scissy . Paternus of Avranches (Saint-Pair) is said to have founded the Abbey of Scissy as a hermit in the Scissy forest. During the French Revolution, Saint-Pair was called Pair-Libre . The place has been a seaside resort since the end of the 19th century. The community got its suffix -sur-mer in 1906.
