Yquelon is a French commune with 1,091 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Manche in the region of Normandy . It belongs to the Arrondissement Avranches and the municipality of Granville, Terre et Mer .
geography
Yquelon is located immediately east of Granville , a small coastal town on the Gulf of Saint-Malo , a few kilometers north of Mont-Saint-Michel . The community in the largely flat hinterland of the coast has the character of a suburb despite the old village center - the transitions to the neighboring communities Longueville in the north, Anctoville-sur-Boscq in the east, Saint-Planchers in the southeast, Granville in the south and southwest and Donville-les- Bains in the northwest are partially flowing. history
The name Yquelon is of Scandinavian origin and means something like 'oak branch'. It appeared as an ikelum for the first time in 1162. About Hiquelon, Ikelon and Ichelon , the spelling developed from 1280 to today's Yquelon .
As early as 1022, Richard II , the Duke of Normandy, donated the parish of Yquelon and its lands to the monastery of Mont-Saint-Michel , which at the time was part of the deanery of Saint-Pair in the Archdiocese of Coutances and part of the barony of Saint-Pair-sur- Mer was.
From 1907 to 1935 Yquelon had a stop on the railway lines from Granville to Sourdeval or to Condé-sur-Vire .

Attractions
The Romanesque church of Saint-Pair dates from the second half of the 12th century. It has a chalice from the 18th century and a painting from 1743 depicting Saint Catherine crowned by an angel .

Economy and Infrastructure
In Yquelon there are six farms (cereal, vegetable and spice plant cultivation, horse, cattle, goat and sheep breeding), numerous craft and service companies as well as small medium-sized industrial companies (including a furniture factory). In recent years tourism has become increasingly important. Due to the proximity to the sandy beaches on the English Channel and the relative proximity to the greater Paris area (285 kilometers), many guest houses and hotels have been created whose prices are significantly more moderate than in the direct coastal area. In addition, many capital city dwellers in Yquelon and the surrounding area have second homes or holiday homes.
