Ponts is a French municipality with 655 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Manche in the region of Normandy . It belongs to the Pays de la Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel .

The scattered settlement of Ponts is located in the north-west of France, 70 kilometers northeast of Rennes . Neighboring municipalities of Ponts are Saint-Jean-de-la-Haize in the west, Chavoy in the northeast, Saint-Senier-sous-Avranches in the southeast and Avranches in the southwest. The municipality covers 670 hectares, the mean height is 40 meters above sea ​​level , the Mairie stands at a height of 18 meters. The Sée flows through the municipality.

According to the law loi Guizot of June 28, 1833, every municipality with more than 500 inhabitants had to have its own primary school . The community rented a school in Avranches, but it fell victim to the construction of the N175 route . In 1838 the municipality purchased a piece of land in the municipality and from 1842 the école des garçons (boys' school) was built, which is now used as the town hall. Today there is no longer a school in the municipality.

Culture and sights

The Gothic church of Saint-Étienne was built in the 15th century and expanded in the 16th century. Their patron saint is Saint Stephen . The square bell tower dates from the 15th century. Above the entrance there is a bas-relief from the 16th century depicting the stoning of Saint Stephen. It was classified as a Monument historique ('historical monument') in February 1954 and downgraded in November 1954. In the church there is a stone baptismal font from the 13th century, which has been classified as a monument historique since 1908. There are also two sets of 17th-century choir stalls from the Avranches Cathedral . There are only eight seats left because the others were damaged in World War II (1939-1945). They have been classified as a monument historique since 1905.
