Location of the community Schönbach in the district of Görlitz | ||
Schönbach ( Upper Lusatian : Schimmch , Upper Sorbian Šumbach ) is a Saxon municipality in the district of Görlitz , in south-east Saxony near the border with northern Bohemia ( Czech Republic ).
Geography and traffic
The community of Schönbach is located in the southwestern part of the district, just under 10 kilometers southwest of Löbau in the Lusatian mountains . The federal highway 96 and the railway line (Dresden) –Bischofswerda – Zittau run south of the community.
The 12-kilometer-long Taubenheim – Dürrhennersdorf narrow-gauge railway ran through Schönbach from 1892 to 1945 . It led from Taubenheim / Spree via Oppach to Dürrhennersdorf .
history
On May 1, 1306, Schönbach was first mentioned in a document as the "Sconenbuch". The name means something like "beautiful beeches by the stream". The place itself is likely to be at least 100 years older, because Franconian immigrants settled the Upper Lusatia area around 1200. As of 1419, the place was subordinate to the town of Löbau as a council village. Since 1600 there were two manors (Oberbach and Niederschönbach). Around 1860 the regular mail service began with the stagecoach on the Löbau – Schönbach – Neusalza-Spremberg route .

The Schönbach Flower Festival
In the years 1955 to 1958 four “flower festivals” were organized. After 70,000 guests in 1956 and around 100,000 guests in 1957, in 1958 over 130,000 guests enjoyed the floats decorated with a multitude of colorful flowers , each of which embodied a theme. The event was soon too big and apolitical for the authorities. In October 1958, the end of the event was heralded at the culture conference in Magdeburg . In 2006, a flower festival was held again on the occasion of the 700th anniversary.
