Midden-Delfland ( listen ? / I ) is a municipality in the Dutch province of South Holland and, according to the CBS, had 19,357 inhabitants on January 31, 2019 . Their total area is 49.38 km². It was created on January 1, 2004 through the merger of the two previously independent municipalities of Maasland and Schipluiden . Audio file / audio sample

Location and economy

The municipality is located east of the municipality of Westland , north of Maassluis and Vlaardingen and southwest of Delft .

There is a junction with the A4 immediately east of Schipluiden . The nearest train station is in Delft.

The economy is mainly based - as everywhere in the Westland - on horticulture (greenhouses). Maasland also has some industry and there is some cattle breeding in the eastern half of the local area. Schipluiden has a large flower and vegetable auction.

Arnoud Rodenburg ( CDA ) has been the acting mayor of the municipality since July 1, 2004 . His colleagues include the alderman Hans Horlings (CDA), Wendy Renzen-van Leeuwen ( VVD ), Sonja Smit ( Open Groen Progressief ) and the community secretary Martien Born .

history

In 2003, archaeologists found the remains of a very old settlement in Schipluiden . This has existed for about 300 years. Possibly around 3600-3300 BC. The first settled people of Holland lived. According to reports from the University of Leiden , the scientifically significant excavation has led to changes in attitudes towards the transition from hunter-gatherers to farmers during the Neolithic period . The settlers cultivated emmer ( Triticum diococcum) , among other things . The residents eventually had to leave the area due to the rise in water levels and flooding. See Schipluiden residence

Den Hoorn, which used to be called "Dijkshoorn", was first mentioned in a document in the 13th century. It is developing into a suburb of Delft, just three kilometers away.

Maasland is a village attested to as early as the early Middle Ages . Originally, Maassluis , which was called “Maaslandsluis” in the Middle Ages, was one of them. The village church is located on a terp where a wooden castle was built, which the Franks and later the Dutch, whose Count Dietrich II. Bought it in 985 from King Otto III. acquired, served as a base. Later Maasland came temporarily into the possession of the Teutonic Order , which had a ball there. Maasland itself always remained a more or less prosperous farming village.
