al-Mumtahana

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Al-Mumtahana ( Arabic الممتحنة al-Mumtaḥana  'The Tested') is the 60th sura of the Koran , it contains 13 verses . It was announced in Medina . Other names for the sura are al-Imtiḥān ("The Trial") and al-Mar'a ("The Woman").

The title refers to verse 10, in which Muslims are prohibited from marrying a non-Muslim partner , male or female. The first part, verses 1-9, turns against friendship with the polytheists at different times, with Abraham being highlighted as a positive example. The second part with verses 10-13 deals with the admission of polytheistic women into the church and is arranged chronologically after the peace agreement of Hudaibiya with the Quraish in 628. In contemporary Salafism , the first verses of the sura serve as one of the most important textual bases for the teaching of al-Walā 'wa-l-barā' .
