al-Qalam

Al-Qalam ( Arabic القلم al-Qalam  'The writing tube') is the 68th sura of the Koran , it contains 52 verses . It is sometimes also called Nūn , after the first letter after the introductory basmala , a so-called " mysterious letter ". Both titles refer to the first verse. The sura can be divided into two sections. The first part with verses 1–16 belongs to the first Meccan period (610–615). According to Nöldeke / Schwally , thepart from verse 17 belongs tothe second Meccan period (615–620); according to the Muslim authors, however, it was mostlyrevealedin Medina .

The introductory oath on the writing tube can refer to a heavenly or an earthly writing implement. In contrast to his opponents, who threaten him with the evil eye , Mohammed is described as not possessed , and his superior character traits are praised. Verses 17–33 address the Meccans, to whom God has given wealth and power, but who do not support those in need and are therefore punished with drought and famine. The final section confirms the authenticity of Muhammad's mission and exhorts him to be patient, following the example of Jonas ("the one with the fish").
